None of our amps use 5ar4's anymore(haven't for 5 years) so I haven't picked one up in years. I am now working on one that I need to replace, so I am looking for input.
I used to use the Chinese (One electon?) 5ar4's and they seemed to be the most robust of the new tubes years ago. Is that still the choice or has someone else come out with a better one?
    Thanks in advance.

JJ's are the best of the worst (new production).

I prefer the Chinese variety to Sovtec and JJ. I've had reliability issues with both, although have not used a Sovtec in several years.

FWIW, I've had the most success with the Sovtek 5AR4.

    My $0.02,

I've had more trouble from the Chinese ones than the Sovtek. Haven't tried the JJ.

That is about what I expected. The one I am replacing is an older chinese unit that lasted 6 years......not bad in my opinion.
I am going to follow your recommendation, I like JJ's in general these days.

    Thanks

I use a JJ 5AR4 and it's been working fine.

I diagnosed a dead Matchless w/ a dead JJ tonight. I like JJ power tubes, but have seen way too many bad 12AX7s and 5AR4s.

So if the new production 5ar4s are hit or miss... what is a reasonably priced NOS tube that sounds good?

The "Fat Boy" Sylvania and RCA's(made by Sylvania?) work well, last long and sound good.
