I originally posted this yesterday in the amps and cab section, but I think it makes more sense over here. :huh

I just picked up a gorgeous, bone stock '62 Princeton. Quick question: I'm going to put in some NOS preamp tubes I've got hanging around. The tube chart calls for a 7025 in the first position. Are there any potential advantages to putting a 12AX7 in this position vs. the 7025? Any reason to absolutely stick with the 7025? I've got a NOS RCA 7025 and lots of old RCA/Mullard/Amperex/Mazda 12AX7s to play with.

    Thanks!

The 7025's are just screened for low noise and are 12ax7's . Experiment away !

12AX7WA was also a low noise tube in addition to the 7025

I never hear much difference with noise on those.

The 7025 is a beefer tube made for military specs. A 12ax7 will work just fine. 7025's are harder to come buy and can be way more expensive versus a 12ax7. And most modern amp companies mark a 12ax7 as a 7025. it's the same tube

Thanks for the tips, guys -- I'll play around with a bunch of different tubes and see which combo this particular amp likes best.

My money is on the RCA, at least that's my old '63 Princeton used to like. Have fun!
