    Any difference between these tubes?

Just picked up a little Gibson Skylark GA-5T with the 6AQ5A's in it. I see mostly the 6A5Q's available for replacement tubes and I'm not sure if I should use those or not to re-tube.

    Thanks,
    J

go ahead..the 'A' designation probably refers to some sort of selected high grade version, but regular 6AQ5's will do the trick. I had one of those amps once - sounded pretty good.

    Thanks!

It is pretty cool, but mine needs some tubes and a speaker (I think). Going for the tubes first.

    Thanks again.

How many 6AQ5's in that amp? I was looking at a schematic on Schematic Heaven and it only shows 1 6AQ5, 1 6X4, and 2 12AX7's.

I have 1 RCA blackplate 6AQ5A and 1 6AQ5 blackplate, and 1 GE 6AQ5 sitting here you can have if you want to drive over and get them. Did you test the ones you have yet?
BTW, bring yer geetar! You'll see why if you stop over lol

    Hi Sara,

Mine has (2) 6AQ5A's, (2) 6EU7's and (1) 6X4. I haven't tested them, but they are old Raytheon's on the pins had a bit of corrosion on them. The 6EU7's are a pair of one older Raytheon and a newer Sovtek. The 6X4 is older as well.

What cha got cookin' up there?

I know I have a bunch of those around here someplace so I'll look around in my tube caddies and see if I have any matching pairs. I know I have several 6eu7's around, I'll email you when I dig them up.

I have a couple of 6005W tubes (which are ruggedized industrial versions of the 6AQ5A) that I bought NOS that sound very good. Much better than the GE 6AQ5A tubes I have.

I like the 6AQ5 tubes. They are kind of a cross between a 6V6 and an EL84. I find them to be bright and chimey like an EL84, but don't sound shrill.
