    Hi,

My friend has a 71 Marshall 50 watt that I am interested in buying. It's got the laydown power tranny and has a post PI master volume installed by a tech that I know and respect. No holes were drilled in the chassis for said MV. Cab is in decent shape.

He is a friend so I want to make it a fair deal for both of us.

    What's it worth?

    Thanks

    Greg

offer him $700. It's a tad low, but fair for a modded amp.

Yeah $700 would be highway robbery if its a good sounding head..id say $1250-1500 would be solid, depending on cosmetics.

He wants 2k for the head which I thought was a little high. I checked ebay and a 71 small box went for about $1500. But that was unmolested and the cab looked to be in better shape. $1200-$1500 sounds about right to me. He also has a 78 Fawn 4x12 that I want. The same one sold on the bay not too long ago for about $1150. I think I'm gonna have to move some gear to pay for this though :) .

    Thanks for the help

    Greg

I want someone to point me in the direction of a clean pre-'73 50 watter for under $2k. I don't see them. Nice ones seem to be $2500 now.

Here's one (trem. version) that someone hit the BIN on for $2500-
    '71 Tremelo 50-watter

Here's a near mint '70 that was listed and had a $2600 bid. The guy cancelled the bid, ended the auction, and just relisted it apparently because he couldn't put up more pic's in the first auction. I'm not sure that he'll get the $3k he wants now.

    Old auction
    New auction

    Edit- fixed the linky

the link for the 'old auction' is the link for the trem amp above it.
darned those cut and paste commands.
yup, $2500 seems to be the price for a non-modded head.
wish i would have never sold mine 15+ years ago. i like the metal face 50 watter quite a bit more than the plexi heads.

the internet has made things way over priced...just 12 yrs ago i sold a 1971 50w modded for MV for 150 quid, roughly $280......thats all they are worth, great amp though.
my answer would be,do u realy want it,if u r going to pay that much for one buy one of the NEW HW series 50w.

Wow, sure shows how I'm living in the past. I was thinking $700 was low, but to think the average is now +$1500...

    Makes me grateful I nabbed my '66 JTM100 for $750 in '98.

A 66 JTM100 just sold for $3200+ and most people thought it went lower then expected. A 71 is still a ptp amp no printed circuit board so they are bringing more money. $1500 to $2000 for 71,72,73. A 69/70 will bring more because it is so close to being a Plexi. Which you won't find for less the $3k in decent shape.

Just make sure it's got both original transformers.

The PPI master can easily be reversed, but if it aint got the original iron it's not worth more than $1k.

With the original trannies in good condition, I'd say $2k..........

I just paid $1200 plus $100 ship/insurance/pakijg materials for a 1981 near mint low serial number JCM800 2203 with the Daly caps and the Drakes. WORTH EVERY PENNY! These amps will be $1,500+ by the end of 2006. Wait n see! THey are going nuts. Ive only seen one other 1981 2203 minty JCM800 on ebay in the last 6 months. It went for $1300 as well plus shipping. !!

Well....I went and did it! He's bringing the head to me on friday. The fawn cab I have been storing for him for some time now so I already have it...I just need to pay him. I'll be selling a JTM45 clone head and an 18watt trem clone 2x12 to pay for this.

    Thanks guys

    Greg

Congrats! I have a '71 50w and it is a very aggressive amp... It was OK w/ EL34s, but when I put a set of Sylvania 6CA7s in it became a junkyard dog!

I just got done playing my JTM45 clone. I definately don't want to sell it but I'm gonna have to. I'll build another I guess. I used to have a 73 50 watt and matching check front 4x12 (with metal handles) that I sold about 7 years ago. I wish I still had that cab. The head I wasn't too thrilled with but I think I was too young to appreciate it at the time. I am a much different player now.

A friend of mine has a 73 100 watt SLP. The 50 watters just don't get the same tone or feel. Unfortunately I don't play in MSG size venues so 100 watts is WAY too much but the 100 watter is what I really want sound wise.
