Working on a mid '90s MIJ Strat for a friend. The nut is a little high. It looks like plastic. If I'm going to work on the nut I'm inclined to go ahead and replace it with Tusq. Anyone know for sure what it's made of?

It is the same as on the AM Std Fender say bone but it is cast. It may have bone dust in it but it is more like hard plastic.

Probably plastic of some kind. Even the Fender "bone" nuts are really Corian or something, not real bone. I don't know how they can call them bone. There is a lot of discussion and arguments on nut material, some like the Tusq, others like real bone (which you can get from StewMac and other places). There's also the graphite type and other materials (vintage Gibsons had nylon nuts).

Sand it a little. Does it smell like burnt plastic?
