along with a Mullard 5AR4 make for a plesent morning!!:D I just swapped out some plain ol' Ruby 6L6's that I had in there to try out and it's not even a contest. The blackplates have so much more clarity, punch & sparkle it's not even funny. Money well spent. Along with a Van smps Sole-mate reverb I'm getting some out the best clean strat tones out there. Who needs a stinking TR Classic reverb?:crazyguy(just kidding). What a great way to start the weekend.

One of the best cleans I have heard was a Komet 60 that Chapin had which was loaded with black plates thru a 4X12 which had blues and something else. Great tones.

Yeah, my Komet with Blackplates and a 12at7 in the pi run through old blues (I used 2 most of the time but 4 was better) was a beautiful thing.

I remember that day. Had Storm Nilson with me and that was just off the charts great tone. The Emerald Pro I brought that day sounded good too. That Komet with that cofig was great .

I'm running two RI Blues in a Mojo Bluesbreaker cab. I'll have to try an AT7 in th pi. Right now I have a NOS 5751 in there.

I'd love to try a 'houla with some Velvet Hammers. Do you still have access to them? I sooo wanted to buy Brewbeck's with the Skyway but couldn't swing it at the time. I had an alder/maple Tele made with Lentz parts and VH pickups. The neck was a strat p/u and the bridge was a VH with the second coil (correct term?) that I could kick in with a mini switch. For a Tele it had some of the woodiest strat neck p/u tones that I've ever heard.

You were absolutely correct! I was pretty happy with the 6V6's in there but the RCA 6L6GC's just kicked it up a couple of notches.

If you hit - you can buy ME & the Komet. Just like that 80's movie "The Toy". I'll swap tubes & bias while you play.

I was running a telefunken 12at7 in the pi. As for the Velvet Hammers, I have a couple of strat pickups, The booster coil T pickups are rare and huge $ when you can find them. I haven't seen one in years. I had a chunk of VH strat pickups stashed that blew up with the house. Brewbeck has a set of VH strat pickups that he had up on the emporium a bit ago, I would have snagged them myself if it weren't for the $8K lawyer bill I got the week they went up.

Foolishly, I sold the guitar back to the builder for some $ & a strat. He was glad to buy it back. The guy lived in Virginia and use to come up to the Philly guitars shows. He use to live in Ca and knew Redd. He had a stash of the booster bridge pu's that he put into guitars that he made. I took his last one that was in his demo guitar.

Was the Mullard 5AR4 already in the amp, or did you put it in at the same time as the RCA's? I'm asking, because I did a similar swap with a 6L6 amp a while back (but I installed the tubes in steps to see where the differences were), and my impression was that the 5AR4 made MORE difference than the RCA 6L6's did!

Not that the RCA's weren't great; it was just that I was STUNNED at the difference a really good rectifier tube - alone - made in the tone.

Can anybody explain why? I'd love to get an answer to that.

No, I put them all in at the same time. I took a chance on e-bay and got all three in a package deal. I'm very happy. Your theory may not be way off. I spoke with Mark from Pure 64 when he was updating my used 64 head. He also thinks they contribute to better tone. He recommended getting one for the amp (& now I may). The amp already had some NOS GE 6L6G's (not GC) coke bottles. While tuning up the amp he temporarily put his own Mullard in and said he could hear a difference. Maybe I'll try & put the old 5AR4 back in the Komet over the weekend and see if I notice a difference.

Anyone know a good place to buy 6L6 backplates? I need them for my TR Classic Reverb!

A lot of members here swear buy Mike at KCNOS & also Hi-test gutars. I cheaped out a little & bought some off of e-bayer "stratbasturd" he had a stash of them. In another thread someone said they had a good dealing with him. He had a set with the Mullard 5AR4 so I took the chance.

BTW, I'd love to compare your TR with the Komet. That amp is definately on my "need to try" list.

You would probably dig my Komet with the "stock" NOS GE 6V6's. It took me about two years before I pulled them out. That's one of the best things about the amp, being able to swap the power tubes with ease.
