I'm in the market for a new steel string acoustic in the $2k-$3k price range. Problem is, the shops in my neck of the woods (Portland, OR) don't have a real broad selection besides Martins, Taylors, Gibsons and Guilds. I’d like to check out some from Collings, Larrivee, Santa Cruz, etc. I currently have a 25-year-old Alvarez/Yairi that is a fine guitar but has developed a few dead spots. It’s just tired, I guess…

So, can someone recommend some shops in OR and WA that have a varied selection and good staff?

I’ve been playing for eons and will know what I like once I play it. At the moment, I’m considering the following attributes:
    1. Rosewood sides/back, Spruce top.
    2. Dreadnought or Orchestra shape. I kinda like the 000's.
    3. Some appointments but not over the top.
    4. Cutaway and Electronics not mandatory.
    5. A warm, balanced sound. Not too boomy or too bright.
    6. Something that will improve with age.

Your suggestions for particular models are also welcome!

    My current contenders are:
    Guild D-55
    Martin 000C16RGTE AURA
but I don’t want to pull the trigger until I can check out a few more. Choosing an electric guitar, for me, is considerably easier than an acoustic.

    Thanks,
    Chris

Pioneer music in downtown portland is a great shop. They have Collings, Santa Cruz, and some others. Make sure to talk to them about what you want. I don't think everything they have is out on the floor.

dusty strings in seattle has best collings selection in seattle. Go 4 blocks up the hill a bit to American music and they had a couple bourgeois last time I was in there.
Both stores not so great on the prices, but I never tried to haggle either one...

There's a place in Renton WA(forget name) that has a lot of Santa Cruz and a few huss & dalton

Emerald City Guitars in SEA has some cool 60s martins and J200s right now - but possibly out of budget
