adjusting in level on vista laptop

I apologize in advance if this has been posted many times. I did a couple searches and didn't find a thread.

I'm just trying to record our practices for learning sake. A couple audience mics in the middle of the room into a preamp, out to a 1/8" stereo plug.
From there we're trying to go in to the mic input (no line in).

I can't figure out how to adjust the input level in Vista. At least with win2k I could pull the fader down.

As a side bar, I'm not entirely sure it wasn't the built in mic on the laptop that did the recording and not the mics. I can't find anything so select input source, level, anything.

I'd rather not have to drag my A/D to every jam.

sorry for the grammar, been a long day.

so it looks like our problem isn't just being able to control the input level, the mic in didn't work at all. it was recorded thru the computers internal mic.

anyone know what I'm doing wrong?
