Advice Needed: Best Tubes for a Carr Mercury?

    Hi Everyone,

    I just picked up a used Carr Mercury and I'm disappointed with the sound. I'm pretty sure the tubes are really old and I'd like to replace them.

    Anyone have any experience with what sounds best in this amp?

    I run NOS preamp tubes and a Chinese KT66. Sounds great. Steve Carr says he designs his amps around currently available tubes, you might want to drop him a line and ask for a recommendation.

    I would retube everything, then see. This is what I have and I'm plenty satisfied:

    V1: Tung-Sol 12AX7
    V2: NOS Mullard 12AT7WA / CV4024
    V3: TAD 7025 S
    P1: JJ EL34

    You also want to make sure it's biased correctly. Here is the manual:
