Or shall we just call 'em the cheapo's choice

Any way I think I need some new ones for my Laney VC30
it's blowing HT fuses every time I use it for more than 15 mins

anyway I’ve had JJ's which were better than the stock (TAD) tubes it was supplied with and have been using those Russian military tube 6p14p-EV's off eBay for 8 or so months,

I've been reading up as I’m looking to get some new ones and slightly suspecting that simply swapping the JJ's for the 6p14p's without taking it to a tech might not have be the reason I’m suffering now...

So I was reading the Watford valves reports on EL84's and noticed the comment they had made about the JJ's when driven with overdrive pedals muddying up and loosing some low end definition in their sum up they rated the Sovtek EL84-EH
above the JJ's because of this, obviously their own Harma brand came top and I've always taken that with a large dose of cynicism
But I did wander if what they had to say about the JJ’s is worth noting as I’ve not always been satisfied with the sound I’ve got through the amp with dirt pedals, and am wondering about the Sovteks or trying to get hold of a matched set of the 6p14p-ev off feeBay

Just wondering whether the Sovteks mentioned on Watford valves are the ones available very where or some a specific designation sovtek EL84.

Also what are others thoughts on the Russian 6p14p’s are the ones from the eastern block reliably matched or not, are they any good is it worth spending that little bit more to get a matched quad or should I stick with either the sovteks or JJs

Is there any credence to the comments about the JJ's mushing up when saturated with od pedals I've been using a weber minimass recently to get they right on the edge of clean with slight volume boosts from the od pedals to push it over

Are the TAD's more relaible in this sort of situation
Would you recomened the TAD El84 M,Cz or STR
And what are the main tonal differences between the JJ's and TADs

I've got two amps with JJs and I like em just fine. I haven't tried anything else though but they don't make me feel a desire to.

Had great results from the Groove Tube EL-84S Slovakian-made tube. I found them to be more consistent than JJ's.

I had a Laney VC-30 for a couple of years. IMHO; For new production the JJ EL-84 is a good tube in this amp. More tone ,longevity and money NOS. Good luck.

I've always liked JJs over any other current production.

Thanks Doug - my bad. I think I knew that, but I get more microphonic problems from the JJ's labels than the GT labels.

I have 4 EL84 amps, and they all seem to sound the best using JJ's....

When I called 65Amps about this, I was told 2 things....

    1) Do not use NOS, JJ's are what we designed the amp to run.

    2) Use tubes that are in the GT 5-7 Range on current draw.

Now they did say, I could run any tube I wanted.

I had in fact run 2 set's of NOS Tesla's in her, and Both sounded better, but did not last because I did not know enough about the London's power amp design.

So just putting a random set of JJ's in would most likely work, but in some amps, you need to watch for red plating. Thats why I will only use either GT matched EL84's or tubes from KCA.

I thought the JJs were mushing out a little at high gain..high OD..(preamp settings) in my Matchless Lightnings and I think the Sovteks less so.
So I swapped in the Sovteks and am happy (happier).

Dan uses NOS Tesla EF86's when he can, not the new JJ verions. Big difference in tone. I have Telefunken EF806's and Mullard 10M's. JJ cant touch these. But the Tesla is ok.

The London is cathode biased, your NOS Tesla's probably just drew too much plate current and burned out quickly. Ei EL84's have a similar issue, many are very high in plate current.

    Hey people,

I'm using a set off JJ EL-84 power tubes from Doug's Tubes in my VHT Pitbull 45/12 combo amp. They sound good and have been reliable since I've had them installed & rebiased back in December of 2007. That amp gets a lot of use as rehearsal/gig amp and the tubes have help up well.
