Advice/school me on loopers

I'd like to get an imaginary friend/rhythm guitarist for practice purposes. I'd like something that can record a 12 bar blues and doesn't suck tone, but aside from that, I don't need bells and whistles. Anything affordable that fits that description?

BTW, If I record something clean, can I put an overdriven lead on top of it? I'm using a PRRI.

Thanks.

yes.

Jamman solo/rc-2 are your bare minimums.

Agreed. The RC-2 is noisy, but I used it for a year or two as my main looper until I sold it for a Boomerang. You can loop, stack, and stack some more...all very easily.

As long as your looper is last in your chain, and you're not relying on your amp for dirt, then you can play clean and use a pedal for dirty tone to solo over your loop.

What if I rely on my amp for dirt, using the guitar's volume knob for gain levels, and want to have a crunch rhythm with the guitar's knob at 3-4, and then have the guitar's knob at 7-8 for leads? Will the looped crunch rhythm still have the lower gain happening?
