Advice wanted for the "Maker Fair"

My kids' school has this upcoming event, that is similar to a science fair, but it is open
to everyone, and can include all kinds of creative projects, art, etc.

They told me I can have the music room, and I offered to set up some microphones,
a mixer and speakers.

This is open to anyone, so I don't expect any kids to show up with musical ability. I'm kind
of thinking about plugging in a couple of tablets into the mixer, and putting synth and/or
drum apps on them, so kids can make noise, along with some delay or pitch effects on the
microphones. Recording might be an option.

If anyone has any suggestions for other things to do, I'd love to hear them. Also, any
warnings would be welcome. I'm pretty sure some kids are going to scream into the mics.
Not sure what to do about that.

some heavy compression...
Do you know of any simple gear solution for this? I don't have any compressors laying around, other than guitar pedals. I wouldn't mind picking something up for future demo recording use, etc.
