There have been several other worthy jazz threads lately. Here is another one. Tonight, I he been on an Ahmad Jamal kick. My favorite pianist alongside Bill Evans. His famous composition, Poinciana. Brilliant man. His new CD is spectacular, called Blue Moon.

I listen to him regularly. He has a truly unique voice on the instrument that makes him so easy to identify. Probably my third favorite jazz pianist behind Monk and Hill.

I've seen Ahmad a few time in very small clubs with his trio, probably back in the late 80s. I really love the Crystal record. Some of his 70s recordings are kind of cool--he does takes on tunes like Superstition, etc. and there are some cheesy vocals, but some cool electric piano playing, although I much prefer him playing acoustic piano.

I inherited an old (60s) Ahmad Jamal Trio LP from my grandmother (who I suspect got it from her nephew, as my grandmother was not so hip), and it served as my real introduction to jazz at 20. Love Ahmad Jamal.

I saw him (with his band) several years ago at NJPAC from the 3rd row. It was mesmerizing.

    Ramsey Lewis opened the show.

    Helluva night.
