My friend Gallighan, is from Ireland and was a soundguy, so he knows his music. He loves Thin Lizzy and the other great Irish rock bands. But we always talked about Rory, and he said Rory was the greatest musician from Ireland. I am torn between him and Phil Lynott still. But Rory always struck me as an amazing one-off of a musician. I have another friend that is older than me by about 12 years or so and he is a freak on Bonamassa, Gary Moore, and really any great guitarist. He somehow didn't know about Rory, so I will never forget the look on his face when I played him some Rory. Literally freaked out and his eyes popped out of his head like a cartoon. No doubt about it, Rory is the MAN.
Love this guy !
I was fortunate to see Rory many times. One of the best of them all. Fire, passion, feeling.......
In Hindsight....Alex's string/pick "sqeal" he did a lot of on many of those first 3-4 albums is very similar to Rory and I bet that's where he got it from. My brother had "against the grain", and I bought "photo finish" when I was about 12 and just learning to play guitar. Very unique strat-y sound at That time. Tight Band. Working man's music.....
it was a crime that the label FORCED him away from the Blues!
What a warm, loving recollection.
I could listen to these stories about Rory for hours. Lifeson is a great story teller. Geddy might be the mouthpiece for Rush, but Lifeson is the Rush statesman/communicator. Especially his "blah blah" performance at the HOF Induction - you could understand what he was saying from his voice inflections and hand gestures without saying a word while at the same time communicating that the HOF is BS. The best HOF speech full stop IMO.
Rory or Alex?
And Rory's playing .
