I'm of a mind that it's the public, not the cashiers, that slow checkout lines.
    But sure.

    My concern would be accuracy.
How many phones/carts can this system "see" at once?
What do you do if you didn't buy Prep H but were changed for it?

Seems like a pretty easy way for folks to shoplift.

Many food stores here in Northern California have self-checkouts. Handy. Another example where companies really don't care about policies and presidential elections and just do what's in their interest to save money.

The ability to "scan" an entire cart at once technology has been in planning/development for many years in the grocery industry. Of course Amazon with all their resources is the first to publicly do it.

My first thought as well. I remember when the self-checkouts first became popular, I knew a couple of girls who would steal all kinds of stuff that way.

Margins are very tight in the grocery industry. Cutting costs has always been a big priority and labor is by far the biggest expense.

I wonder how it's going to handle prepaid cards.

The anti Google as information gatherer crowd will go nuts. Imagine the reaction to them knowing everything you buy at the market!

I'll patronize the stores that employ people.

Not many years from now this will be the norm, along with driverless cars and trucks. There will be many jobs automated that we can't even imagine right now. As a society we will have to think of ways to occupy and pay the millions of people whose jobs are displaced, because the alternative is not pleasant to imagine.

Well, those shelves don't stock themselves. At least until the robots take over. I, for one, am ready for our AI-enabled grocery store overlords.

I'm all about jobs, but taking into account the quality of cashiers, food workers and waitresses these days, I'm fine with this. Heck we've all been pumping our own gas for decades now.

Another move towards a cashless society. Banks will get a merchant fee off of every sale.

Unless this allows for substantially cheaper prices, what's the big deal?

You save a couple minutes at the check out? Not sure how it will change amzn stock unless many stores open up.

I'd use it in a heartbeat. Sign up in advance, Amazon has all your payment info. Walk in. Take what you want, put it in your cart, walk out. I see no need for cashiers in my life and hate waiting on grocery store lines. This cannot come soon enough for me.
