Wierd...plays and sounds great. Suddenly it goes really low volume (like attenuator on 20!) then cuts out....

    Big probs or tube issue?

    Thanks! Jim

You might have a parasitic oscillation problem. Some amps will have sort of a feedback loop that happens - once it gets started it can shut the amp down. In any event you'll probably have to have somebody look it over. I had an old Vox do that once - fixed it by shortening and relocating one of the leads.

Oh, forgot to say this - since most tube amp problems are related to faulty tubes, you might try changing the power and rectifier tubes and see if it happens again.

I'd say tubes. Chances are that a parasitic oscillation would have happened before. I'm not saying it isn't that, but I'd check tubes first! Could be a dodgy recto.

There are SO many possibilities it's hard to know where to begin.

Start by eliminating everything except guitar, cable and amp (no effects).

Try another cable, try another guitar, etc.

If you're unable to work inside the amp start with tube substitutions and cleaning your tube pins and sockets.

Check the FAQ on my website under Resources on how to do this.
