There has been a huge scandal in the US military. Amway and similar businesses were targeting military spouses for the 'presentation' while their spouses were on deployment. Soldiers return to huge debt. Families falling apart. Many divorces resulting. The govt had to step in because it was affecting the readiness of some units.

To be fair, there’s a whole range of “alternative health care” pyramid schemes that are often worse, and require even more cultish gullibility.

    But yes. Barfffffff.

network marketing always turns into a cult-like thing. The number of hours you spend to make $1 is a ridiculous waste of time. You would do better with a part-time job at Wendy's. Just my biased opinion.

This is 100% my personal experience.

Amway the company makes fine products and is a pretty straightforward company from my experience. Their business model certainly lends itself to shenanigans by independent distributors tho.

I was basically coerced into spending money I didn’t have to go to a huge rally in Orlando back in the early 90s.

20,000 people sitting for like 6-8 hours at a time (multiple sessions a day!) just googoo eyed listening to “multi-millionaires” telling bourgeois tales of their opulent lifestyles.

I bailed after the first session and told the couple who Shanghai’d me that I was going back to spend the rest of the weekend chilling at the pool in the $$$ hotel room I basically had to stay at in order to get the tickets.

They called me a loser and a “sheep” as they hurriedly walked back to get in line to wait in queue with the other 20,000 “independent business owners” in the Orlando swamp heat for 2 hours just to get back in to sit thru another 6 hour “training” session.

    Yea, I’M the sheep:confused:

Their entire “Downline” collapsed a few years later after recordings of their top pyramid guy bragging to other top folks about how they all make the vast majority of their income from their “business tools” like self-help books & crappy live recordings of the numerous rally speeches that new recruits were basically hard-pressured into buying every single week, no matter what.

They were told to constantly listen to the tapes in their cars and home, read the books to “feed your mind” with positivity, i.e. their propaganda, and ignore everyone (family and friends) who wasn’t on board with your future.

Anyway itself is fine, but that Dexter Yeager “System” was toxic and absolutely ticks every category box for classic cult definition.

    Google Kenny Stewart Amway

There was also a link with check cashing/payday loan businesses. The marketing facilitators were pushing the check kiting to finance the business model.

I live a half hour from headquarters. I hate it and won't touch it. But the devos family did start art prize. They donated to a hospital. They pay for grand Rapids fire works every year. The local hockey/ concert arena is named after them. It single handedly revived grand Rapids. They seem like great people.

But i don't want anything to do with their business.

The contributions that the DeVos family have made to Grand Rapids are a pittance compared to the billions they've sucked out of desperate people too foolish to see through their BS. They're grifters, and Amway isn't their only con.

They don't seem like great people to me.

The indoctrination and counter argument is that one shouldn't think about it as being pressured, rather one should be grateful for having been shown the path to a better life.

Sounds about right. Indoctrination and free thinking never went hand-in-hand.

The Amway people I've had dealings with start from the false premise that everybody should be selling Amway. When I was hit up by friend #1, I was in the furniture business, a family business my father started, which was handed down to me. I didn't need more money, I needed more time to go fishing. Here I am with a successful, established business and he can't understand why I have no interest in Amway. Fast-forward ten years and friend #2 fishes on my boat, he's the associate preacher at my church, and we spend a fair amount of time together. He starts getting involved Amway. He knows my opinion of Amway, good products but I have no interest in selling their products. A few months after he started with Amway he shows up on my front porch with another mutual friend. It's 8:30pm, I'm still wearing a coat and tie from work because it'd been a long, HARD day. He wants me to let our mutual friend do his presentation on me so he can get some practice. I never let them in the house. For those of us already in business for ourselves, and succeeding at it, we might not be your target audience.

I am estranged from my brother, his wife, and kids over multi-level marketing crap. I hate them for insulting my intelligence in trying to use the same tired tactics to rope me in, and they hate me for my forceful rejection of their ploy.

My parents got into Amway when I was a kid. I think they ended up just keeping a small group of people supplied with the soaps and laundry detergents, which were good products.

I remember all the Amway boxes of varying sizes that the UPS truck would drop off at our house. I used them to build some epic Alex Van Halen style cardboard drum sets.

My first experience with Amway was when a friend invited me to dinner one evening to hear a "motivational speaker". I'd never heard of Amway at the time-this was in the eighties. I steered clear of the strong arm sales push, but my friend fell into it. His place was filled up with all the stuff they made him buy. He later moved to Saudi, and I wonder if that was the extreme that he had to go to to get out of the cult. o_O

Apples and oranges... the company I work for doesn't recruit people to join with pictures of yachts, Ferraris, etc.

Exaggerated income claims are the bane of the MLM industry. I'd guess you had an Amway-issued manual telling you what you can and can't say from an income claim perspective and probably a mandated Income Disclosure Document that you had to distribute at your meetings... but I could be wrong.

My wife signed up with Melaleuca years ago. We like the products and I don't recall any hardcore sales tactics.
