I know that this has been done before but bear with me here.
Let me preface this with this statement; “I am a RAT guy.”
Ok, now that we have that out of the way, I need your help.
The RAT has always worked for me in a band situation. Currently working on putting a duo together with vocal and electric guitar doing an eclectic array of music.
For lower volume type stuff the RAT is a little thin. Great for cutting through a loud group but not in this situation.
I need a little grind with full bandwidth to keep the sound full.
Looking hard at the Barber Gain Changer SR. Would this scratch that itch?
    Any others?
Thanks to the hive in advance!

Absolutely. It's one of the best of them.

The Gain Changer ended my search for an overdrive. I had hated overdrives for years and I’d never have one for more than 6 months before getting frustrated and selling it. I’ve had the Gain Changer on my board since they came out.

Thank you both a bunch! Still open to other suggestions but leaning hard in this direction.
    I really appreciate your responses.

I used a Proco Rat, and then a brat for a few years. I have a allum 308 Rat pedal but I just don’t get along with it. I really haven’t tried my low gain with any of them. For low gain I love my BUTAH but it colors it in a very good way.. recently I acquired a Jetter Helium and man is it special. It really enhances the amp to guitar touch sensitivity even when Gain is rolled about off.

I’d recommend both of those as low gain.

I have a Gain Changer , Rat and Timmy on my board.. 3 of the best pedals on the market for good reason.. I have them all set for different tonal applications... Specifically the GC can do very well on its own or stacked ... You won't be disappointed by the GC.

No need to set your Rat aside. A TS stacked with a Rat has always been a classic combination. Start with TS at zero or minimal gain, and tweak from there, to add some mids and warmth to the tinny Rat at low vol.

(recommending an 808 for my 808th post... haha)

If you like the basic Rat sound but want something more overdrive-ish, try a DOD 250. Same basic architecture I think, not as high gain, does great from clean-ish boost to medium drive levels. Not a bad sound in the pedal.

Full bandwidth = Boss BD-2 or Boss OD-3.

    Not going to work.

I'd suggest getting a second RAT, perhaps a You Dirty Rat or a Fat Rat. Clip the 47ohm resistor in the YDR, or use the FAT and Mosfet switches on the Fat Rat. This should help fatten up your sound. Another option is getting a modded RAT with a sweep control (one with a 1k pot). This should allow you add a ton of low end to make the sound fatter.

If that doesn't work, try perhaps a Nobels ODR-1 or something along those lines. Visual Sound Open Road, Visual Sound/Truetone VS-XO, Nobels ODR-S, Wampler Paisley Deluxe (the 5 knob side is based on the ODR-S), or DCW ODR Mod.

Gain Changer is a winner of a pedal at both high and low volumes.

I have a "thing" for Low-gain (up to mid-gain) pedals. I have a number of them now that ALL work great:

    Xotic RC
    Xotic AC
    Bearfoot Honey Bee
    J. Rocket Blue Note (the full-sized one with the "Hot" switch)
    Vemuram Jan Ray

I also have a Kingsley Page V2 arriving tomorrow.

I don't want to go check out the Barber GC for fear of getting yet another!

Boss BD-2. Would sound great into the RAT as a gain boost in front of it.

how can folks suggest a "best" situation overdrive pedal without considering {at minimum} amp & guitar? in my experience with dirt pedals, aside from a clean boost, they are very important. to me, vox & marshall amps are fussy. and some drive pedals sound meh with specific fenders.
