Today, while talking to another TGP friend on the phone, I realized that it's been over a month now since I've made any "music gear" related purchases, sales or trades, (the Anit-GAS Tri-fecta). Not since I've joined this forum has that happened. So it got me to thinking; What's the longest period of time that's gone by before you either bought, traded or sold any gear?

This current period is the longest for me. It's been at least 8 months since I've bought a pedal, amp or guitar...

Coincidentally, it is also the time period that I've been the happiest with my home, family and work life - so there must be some meaning there that I will choose to ignore when I start my next GAS cycle... :D

    Ya know, it depends.

I've had the same acoustic guitar for 15 years. My number one (Crowdster Plus 2) I've had and loved for just under 8 years now. My other number one (Hollow Atom CT) just one and a half years, and my only other guitar for just under a year.

I've gotten a couple cheap pedals and an acoustic preamp and stuff, but my main sound is from an HD 500 and AG Stomp. I've had the AG Stomp forever, since they first came out, and the HD 500 for 3 and a half years.

Incidentally, I've downsized over the past 5 years and haven't spent "new money" on any music gear in about 7 years.

8 Months? Wow....that's some really good discipline there! But the point you make about "happiness" is something I've been experiencing, so perhaps there's a correlation?

From age 24 until age 52 I bought one acoustic guitar and maybe changed strings once a year. Then I thought maybe acoustic guitar wasn't the sounds I heard in my head, it was electric. Since then I at least buy strings if nothing else but usually a lot more. I marked 30-90 days. ;)

Since I started playing seriously? Six or seven years.

Since I joined HC/TGP? Not quite a year but the one item I bought, I bought for the pick guard, swapped on a white guard and gave away the guitar so it kinda doesn't count... Right?

    :p

In 1993 I had a PRS Custom 24 and a Fender "The Twin". Didn't buy another guitar or amp until almost 20 years later (during that time I went to Berklee, was always in bands, etc.). Getting a real job as an adult and this internet has been my downfall.

I think the longest I've gone is about five years. My current streak is a little over two years, and I expect it to go on for a long time, because I have six guitars that I'm really happy with (this has never really been the case since I started buying and selling in 1975).

Oh- just inherited a piano, but I'm not going to count that, as I don't even play. ;)

If we distinguish between GAS and maintenance/necessity purchases then I went at least 3 years without the former.

If you're counting before I became "serious," it was probably 8 years or so, between buying my first acoustic junior year of high school to buying my second electric about two years after college. In the 2-3 years since, GAS has run rampant

Since encountering this forum, longest I've been without a significant purchase/sale/trade was about 4 months.

EDIT: For me, it's also true that I'm more prone to buy something when I'm unhappy. Recently I've been stressed out, so some new gear was pretty much inevitable ;)

Financial issues kept me out of the gas game for over a year. It still governs my participation, but I'm back in. I try to be prudent though ;-)
