I just sold a pedal and an amp today and bought a guitar yesterday.
I feel like buying is more of a problem than selling.
I've declared the end of the road on anything that isn't both 1) revenue neutral and 2) at least a 2 or 3 out, 1 in equation.
I sometimes go years without buying anything more than strings maintenance supplies, happy to just play what I have. At other times, something will get me started and off I go. One thing leads to another and so on. Then I settle down into just playing again.
I use to enjoy buying, selling, playing... These days, just switching on my gear seems like a chore. More often than not, I'll walk to my rig to turn it on, and instead opt for a hand-chopped milkshake and a movie.
I sold a pedal almost two weeks ago, but then bought a new neck for my telecaster yesterday. So... 12 hours?
I was doing pretty good, made it past a year by about a week, but just ordered a used Ibanez AT100CL, my reward for logging an unpleasant number of overtime hours this year.
If you're gonna work your ass off, you deserve a reward for doing it. Otherwise, why do it? I mean, besides the normal survival stuff.
This.....after taking 5+ years off gear purchasing to dedicate to family needs, the last couple of years have found me in the golden era of double digit gear consumption. I work hard and make sure my family is provided for first, but reward myself with the leftovers.
Okay, this thread has been pinned to the top of this page since 2014, any chance it can move down and away? I’m not picking, but is this really THE hotspot thread?
Let it go!
When I used to tour extensively(bass player), I had a spartan approach to music:
My main bass
A stage rig
A practice combo.
Now that I’ve been outta the touring game for a few years, I’ve filled the gap in my life with buying an irresponsible amount of gear. I gotta get in a band before my wife executes me.
I'm in the same spot now. Lots more gear than I had when I actually needed it.
Same with the computers. I'd have killed to have the equipment I have now back when I was a developer.
(Oops! Upon reflection, I realized that I was talking only about electric guitars; with the inclusion of "all" the gear I use (mics, PA's, acoustic guitar pickups, etc...), that pretty makes my entire post BS... just sayin'...)
Ha! Just saw this... been awhile since I've been here...
Longest time? From 1980 to 2010 - and I bought a Tube Screamer... living as a singer/songwriter/guitarist with high ideals about my "art" has trained me into being VERY frugal... and getting the most out of what I have... and loving it.
How long HAS it been since Friday?
My name is StressDoubt and after fourteen years of being clean I bought a Blackstar HT1r last April, since then I’ve bought far more than I’m prepared to admit but I have not had a relapse in almost three days since I happened across an eBay bargain Sigma 000m-1st I couldn’t pass up!
From the Big Bang until about 1990 ish.
2001 to 2018. No spare money.
I literally bought or sold nothing from 2001-2009.
Best years of my life.
I'd say the longest I've gone without buying gear was the first 14 years of my life before I picked up a guitar.
This year however, not so hot. I'm averaging 2 pedals a week.
Went to Tokyo this past weekend. Came back with a 2018 Tokai Love Rock LS196.
