Any alternatives to Colour Box for overdrive console tones?

I don't have an extra $400 to drop on a Colour Box, but love those overdriven console tones. Right now I'm especially digging Townshend's tone on "Who Are You".

Just wondering if there is anything else out there that'll approximate those tones. Doesn't need to be super fuzzy, just full frequency without any rolloff.

you could get probably 10 of those multitrack recorders for what that eq pedal costs.

Wasn't there a similar thing called the Petty John?

Bumped for interest. I would love to have a Color Box and I've had it in the cart several times but I can't complete the transaction. That's a lot of money so I can play "Revolution." I didn't know Pete did the same thing on "Who Are You." That and I've heard some reports that it was noisy. Then again, I see Elvis Costello has one on his board.

I didn't think there were any alternatives but then this is the first I've heard of the Petty John.

I met one of the owners at a summer camp I was playing at last summer. He told me all about it and said I should check it out. I did and was interested... until I saw the price. Nice guy though!

For what it's worth, Pettyjohn is the name of the company. The pedal is called the Predrive.

Doesn't the Strymon Deco do something similar albeit in a different way with it's tape saturation function?

Anyway, great thread. I'm interested to hear other replies as well.

I use my VFE Triumvirate Boost for this, low gain boost/OD model. Basically like sending signal through 3 way crossover then giving each of those bands a OP-amp drive and volume knob. Mids drive is where it's at then just balance in bass/treble around it. Crossovers are adjustable internally but I've never felt need to mess with them.

Works great after fuzz and OD too as a tone/OD balancer type pedal, wish your fuzz didn't get buried in the mids, crank in a little mid OD after the fuzz.

You can drop all the bass, most the mids and leave treble with a little grit on it, gives you that "Wish You Were Here" type AM radio grit. It basically is a bass/mids/treble mixing console.

Another vote for the Mid-Fi Demo Tape Fuzz

I have both the JHS Colour Box and the Mid-Fi Demo Tape Fuzz, and they can sound similar.

    This one looks interesting:

The Broadcast is a discrete Class-A germanium pre-amplifier based on the classic broadcast consoles of the 1960s. In the low-gain setting, the Broadcast can cover everything from sparkling clean boost through to transparent overdrive, all with a healthy dose of volume available to push your amp. The Broadcast features a specially selected Triad steel-core transformer and a NOS germanium transistor. Advancing the gain on the Broadcast starts to saturate the transformer and the pedal’s discrete circuitry, giving rise to a gentle and dynamic compression coupled with subtle thickening of the midrange. With the gain switch in the high setting and the trim control wound up, the Broadcast starts to deliver heavier distorted sounds with a warm and fuzzy edge to them. The Broadcast covers a wide range of driven and distorted tones whilst remaining dynamic, responding well to pick attack and the subtle nuances of every player.

The first 15 production units will feature a Mullard-made NOS black glass CV5712 (OC71) germanium transistor and the subsequent units will be fitted with a NOS Russian type.

    FEATURES

Hand selected NOS germanium and silicon transistors
Specially chosen TRIAD Magnetics steel-core transformer
    Alpha potentiometers
    Neutrik jack sockets
Heavy duty footswitch (wired for true bypass)

I keep hoping Chandler will do a version of the Colour Box.
