50s, maple Esquire into an early, tweed Deluxe.

How can I get the same dynamic, overdriven sound at quiet levels?

try a bearfoot honey bee, i picked up one last month. one of the best pedals i've ever owned or played. insanely dynamic and very good pairing with a tweed - at all volumes.

I'll have to try one soon.

Despite the annoying voiceover … around 2:50 is the tone I'm after

I have no personal experience, but I hear good things about the Catalinbread formula no. 5

*and yeah, that voice-over was ridiculous.

I have had several 5E3's and I like to use a TS-9/808. Cheap/effective tones, and easy to get.

I run a 5E3 and have been for a while now, the pedal that I thought was closest to the amp itself was the Field Effects Manifold Drive...that pedal really shines as a low gain/dirty tweedy amp grit. Check out Greg V.'s demo, it's quite accurate and he runs it through a Swart if I recall correctly. Sweet pedal, check it out if you can.

The white zone is for loading and unloading. If you must load or unload, go to the white zone! Sorry, that voice over is just weird! It reminded me of Zappa on Joe's Garage!

Before listening, I was going to say KOT because is works so well with tweeds. However, that sound at 2:50 is more geranium fuzz like in character to my ear. Sunface would be a lot of fun and very dynamic.

    Good luck!

the reason i suggested the honey bee is you mentioned quiet levels. very few overdrives - actually ZERO that i have found - can accomplished this with a tweed at "quiet" levels. most tweeds want the **** pushed out of them to get a "fuzzy" and fat ass farty sustain. of which, a timmy or any decent clear voiced pedal could do if allowed to nudge a cooking tweed. i hate suggesting boutique pedals but these are obtainable and the buy in isn't stupid.

Now that I think about it, you're quite right. If you want something warmer go with the HBOD...I had one and it really loved tweeds. I plan on getting the Beest sometime in the future. The Manifold Drive is brighter and more cutting and can really get fuzzy itself when totally cranked. Both excellent choices that can be found for around the same price.

Tone Monk Phoenix. Amazing pedal and a perfect match for a 5E3.
