I have a Lowden from before George split from the company, and I've played a few Avalons in stores. They seem to have a similar sound and build quality but at lower prices, so they get my thumbs up!
I have an Avalon L 375 cedar/koa. It is truly a spectacular guitar. It is the guitar that I use mostly for open tunings like DADGAD. It seems to sound best for Celtic and other styles where I need a big ringing sound with lots of sustain.
