There seems to be near unanimity on the high quality of JJ EL84 power tubes.

What's the skinny on the JJ 12AX7?

How does it compare with EH?

If I used new production 12AX7's I would use JJ's. Fuller, warmer sounding to my ears than the rest. They(ECC83s) might lack a tad of high end complexity over some of the others but the long plate JJ ECC803s makes up for it and I used to use a combination of them with good results. Of coarse this is totally subjective. I suggest you give them a try(both types) and then you will know. If you dont like them sell them and recoupe some of the money spent on them. Its the only way to really know if a tube works for you.Bob

As "rockon1" said, it's totally subjective... But to me, the JJ preamp tubes are very dark and muffled. They kinda suck the life out of amps. But there are tons of people that like that darker tone, so it's just my opinion!

I like to put one or two of them in my amps but never more than that. They are sturdy and dependable but a bit dark.

me, I think they are just fine. When I hear differences in tubes it seems to be mainly because of differing gain.

+1 on Dark and Flat (the ECC83s)---- in some amps/positions they are exactly what's needed----- usually quite stable----- had microphonic problems with the JJ ECC803s and i don't care for them.
I keep a shash of new JJ ECC83s as one of my go-to new production pre tubes along with EH and Tung-sol 12ax7's...................gldtp99

For EL84s, I like the TADs...darker than the JJs. I'd like to try TADs new ax7s. :D

JJ ax7s..I loved at one point ... I still like their ECC803 but not so much the regular ECC83 anymore for the reasons others have already stated.

EH 12ax7 is very neutral sounding to me and a bit sterile...nothing really stands out.

I like the JJ 12ax7, i've tried the EH and Sovteks and found them to be very sterile and harsh.

I like em on Mondays and Fridays. :) Seriously I like them in a amp that needs a warm tube when it is already too bright.

When I was retubing my Vicky 35310, I got some Tung Sol 12ax7's and JJ 12ax7 to try out in V2 and V3. The Tung Sol's worked great in V2 in my Germino C45 but were too hot and muddy for the V2 in the 35310. The JJ was just right with nice balance and warmth. Can't comment on the JJ in V1, that's NOS 12ay7.

I put JJ's in my Hot Rod Deluxe and used them in my old AC30, and they sound great!

I preferred them over everything except Amperex Bugle Boys in my Maz Jr., but that was a very detailed and bright amp.

Every amp I get, I'll do a tone test with whatever tubes I have on hand to find what works best and I'm always surprised. Think of it as spicing. Some amps need the crispy stringiness of EHs to bring out the detail, others need the dull thud of the JJs to smooth out the tone.

Not a good or bad situation. All things considered, there are some great new production tubes these days. It's just about learning their characteristics so that you know where they might excel.

I like the reissue Tun Sol 12AX7's. Very FAT...at least, they are compared to EH.

They sound Ok in my Plexi clone, but too dark in my 2 other amps. I've got 2-3 each of several different top brands and I gotta say, I'm currently digging Sino/Chinese 12AX7s for higher gain stuff with humbuckers.
