It seems like every amp I have played that did NOT have a 12ax7
in the first position of the pre amp sounded better.

    examples:

    EF86 on the AC15

    5879 on the gibson ga40

6u6 on the little silvertone amps

    all better than the 12ax7

    IMHO

I really like the 12AY7s in the tweeds.

    I like a good EF86 for sure.

I love the tone of the 6SJ7GT. Kind of like an octal version of the EF86, but sounds pretty different.

With all that said, a lot of the 'tone' associated with each of these rigs I described above came with the whole package. The input tube had an effect, but there was always more to the story, and good amps with all 12AX7s always sound great too.

    I don't have any EF86's but I do have a few RCA 5879's.

I too echo the entry about the 12AY7 in v1. I have this currently in my Blues Junior and it allows for a much greater range of preamp usage than before. To me, the 12AX7's got too mushy and flubby once I got past 6 or so. Now, I have many more sonic options and I've noticed a much larger "sweet spot" when incorporating pedals in the chain.

I'm a fan of whatever the amp was designed to run. An AX7 and AT7 might be electrically compatible but there are some significant differences and you can't always just interchange them. For example, putting an AX7 into the phase inverter of a fender amp will usually sound like crap as will putting an AT7 into the phase inverter of a Marshall. Likewise, putting an AX7 into the reverb driver or an AT7 into the reverb recovery will sound like crap. Each tube has optimum operating characteristics and if the circuit is designed for a specific tube in terms of the electrical characteristics of its preamp position, best to stick with it IMO though in the end, your ear is the best guide so...nevermind. ;)

I like 5751's triodes in parallel.
6sc7's in single or parallel triodes is also really sweet imho.
    YMMV

I use an AX7 for reverb driver and AT7 for reverb recovery in my JCM 800 and it sounds tits! I call BS, sir!

Can I selectively hate only modern 12AX7s? There's nothing smooth of musical about any ones I've tried, but the Mullards, GE's, Sylvanias, and Philips I have all sound excellent when stuck in the right amp. I've got a short plate GE in my Valve Jr. and that little sucker cooks!
