I've heard the magnet cover can be a problem being too big for some amps and I wanted to make sure it would fit before I spent that kind of dough.

    Thanks in advance.

I have not done a Blue, but it is doable, you will have to remove the bell but it will fit. I have installed a Red Fang in a Mercury which is an Alnico speaker with excellent results. It takes a little bit of work, but is worth it! PM me if you go this route, I can walk you through the install!

Thanks Joe. Does the bell removal have any negative effects on the speaker or is it just a cosmetic thing?

    Hey Joe!
Did the Red Fang fit in the Mercury without modification to anything?
I could not fit a Governor in the Mercury!:jo
I'd like to try a Red Fang.

There are some mods required, but they are reversable if you decide to go backward. Basically, you end up removing the baffle and mounting the speaker with the flange in front of the baffle instead of behind it. It's a little bit of an ordeal, if you are interested PM me!

I have removed the bell on BOTH Celeston Blues in my 2x12 cab b/c I thought they were the source of mysteriuos "rattles" that were driving me crazy. Bell overs are just cosmetic AFAIK

FWIW, after trying a G12H30, Greenback, and Blue in my Mercury, I thought the Greenback sounded the best, and I am not typically a GB fan. I thought the Blue sounded too bright, and a bit edgy on the top end in the Merc.

The other thing that I did with my Merc that made a pretty nice diff is upgrading the tubes, I went to Mullard CV4004 and 4024.

Thanks. That's good to know. When I use the boost control and the tone section gets bypassed, unless I'm cranking it, there aren't any lows to speak of. It sounds great at full throttle, but could probably use a hair more bottom there too. Can you describe the sound of the GB vs. the Blue?

    Anyone else try a Blue?

Joe, I installed old Mullards in the pre and power section and they sound awesome. :dude

Maybe a bit OT, but FWIW I installed a Scumback SA12H-75 in my Merc and absolutely love what it's done to the amp.

Because the bass is somewhat attenuated when the boost function is used, it would be cool to try a Heritage G12H30. it is a 55Hz speaker. I didn't have one at the time, but I am actually combining one with a Blue in my TopHat Club Royale.

I installed a Blue in my mercury last week. The bell Cover clears the chassis by about 1/16".

OK, so it looks like a Blue WILL fit in the Mercury.

I'm about to place an order - I'd love to hear what all of you mercury owners think is the best speaker for this great amp.

Did you have to do any mods to get that Blue in there?
