    I've got a 1993 G&L S-500. Killer guitar that I picked up used for just $525

Sounds great, but I can't help but wonder how great it might sound with Lollars or Fralins. Anyone have any experience modding a G&L S-500?

What pickups does it have in it now? Are they the G&L MFD's?

yep they are the MFD's... I realize MFD's are single coils, so my thread title is pretty dumb. I suppose I meant "has anyone ever put boutique pickups in a G&L S-500?"

I'm thinking I'm gonna put Lollar Blackface pickups in it

I put a set of Kinman's in mine. I like the MFD's that it came with but I had to try some noiseless Kinman's to get rid of the hum. They do sound good and they are quiet.

You can't go wrong with Lollar Blackface in your s-500! The MFD's sound pretty cool, but not much quack - they're closer to P90's, maybe...?

Right now I've got stock G&L legacy pickups in my s-500. Nice bit of quack, but hotter than a set of Blackfaces.

With the Lollars, you'll have a super versatile strat.

...i took the kinman's out of mine in favour of the suhr silent backplate system. the stock single coils are superb.

Are you using the Suhr pickups as well? If so how do they sound different from the Kinman's?

Well, I put the Lollar Blackface pickups in my S-500 tonight, and whoa do they sound incredible. I've always been impressed with all of Lollar's pickups but these are just something else. Beautiful tones...

How would you describe the difference in tone from the stock MFD's?

    Night and day

Seriously though: very different. Sounds like a Vintage Strat now. More clarity, more quack, more chime. The MFD's are great pickups, just not my "thing".

I'm digging the sounds of the MFDs right now- will the 'stock' Suhr backplate fit the S-500 or will it require a few more holes?

Did you install the pickups to still use the toggle switch on the s-500? I'm looking at putting some lollars in mine but want to make sure i know how to wire them to still get those extra pickup settings via the toggle. thanks!
