Anyone like their Peavey Windsor??

I recently traded a guitar for a Peavey Windsor head. I never played through one but listened to quite a few clips and read a lot of reviews. Seemed like it would do the classic rock tones fairly well. I don't know what it is, but it just sounds dead, muddy, and lifeless to me. It's got JJ preamp tubes and Ruby power tubes; not sure how old they are. Does anyone have anything different to report or some suggestions for settings?

jj preamp tubes are good for lots of amps, they last long and they tame brightness in bright amps, however; the windsor is already a dark amp so i would yank the jj's and try different pre tubes. EH makes some pretty bright tubes, maybe try tung sol also.

WELLLLLLL, I was took a 100watt Windsor home from BestBuy of all places for $160.00 new. Hell I figured for that I could slave it just for the power amp if nothing else.

Even as cheap as it was, I took it back. I was truely surprised at just how awfull it sounded. I swapped some tubes in, tried some different cabs with it, NO GO. I'm sure I would have liked it better back was I was 16 although it would've been a toss up next to my little Crate combo:barf

I think the old POD bean thing sounded better.

I definitely don't want to dump any cash into it, that's for sure. I took it as a trade for an LTD guitar that I was trying to sell for 6 mos w/ no luck. Maybe I'll have better luck selling the Windsor if I can't coax a 1/2 decent tone out of it.

You must have 12AX7's lying around. Try some different ones. Power tubes-dont know how old they are or what the bias is set at? Any one or all three could be a problem. Just because Im stubborn I'd check all three before I gave up! lol! Havent found a peavey I could coax a decent (not always necessarily great) tone out of. Bob

I just picked up a new condition used Windsor. I have been considering Doug's mods posted over at Aaron Nelsons stompbox forum, but in the mean time here's what you do - pull the first 12ax7 and replace it with a quality 12at7 instead. I have a Telefunken in mine. Suddenly you have a totally different, and usable amp that *will* clean up nicely.
It's not a perfect solution, but it's easy and reversible.

Use the low input and don't dime the gain.
I crank it a bit and it sounds pretty good.
Just back of the treble a bit.
