Anyone try NOS tubes in there Budda? I have heard here that alot of people say that the Budda is designed around the Groove tubes and they sound the best. Whats the word?

Honostly, thats what I was told about mesa boogie amps and their tubes.
I believed it up until I gave some NOS preamp tubes a try.
And I also found many current production power tubes that have a much better sound than the stock mesa tubes.
I would seriously consider at least trying a couple NOS preamp tubes.

I didn't really dig the Budda too much with the stock tubes. It was pretty sweet with some NOS tubes, though.

Does that mean you prefered the current production groove tubes to some NOS stuff in the Budda?

Sounds to me like he's saying the opposite.

My bad guys i red it wrong! lol

    Hey Mike or any one

What do you recommend for a Budda Superdrive 18 combo in the way of NOS Tubes. I have Some Brimar 12ax7's, Jan Phillips 12ax7s, Amprex Bugle Boy, and Telefunken Smooth plates. What do you guys think? Out of these or anything else there? Anybody have any experience.

The amp guys I've talked to voice their amps to work well with current production tubes. It makes sense, because they are readily available and inexpensive.

NOS can certainly improve things. In my experience it always does, but how much depends on the amp, and which tubes I choose.

My neighbor and I were experimenting Saturday with preamp tubes in his D'Lite. We concluded that there were certain applications where an EH would be a better choice than a NOS RCA in V1. But, we also concluded that the NOS sounded richer. V1, V2 and the PI all influenced the tone of his amp.

I left a few tubes for him to experiment with. When he decides on his favorite combinations, we'll put together a backup set for each application.

Not trying to hijack here. I think a similar approach can be used to voice your Budda to sound better, and be more versatile.

You've got the amp, the tubes and the ears. Does anyone else's opinion count? No! Start tube rollin'! :dude

I run all NOS tubes in my SD30 series 1 head, with the exception of the stock rectifier tube and the phase inverter (new production stuff). GE 12AX7s and NOS Telsa EL84s. Huge difference, IMO. Absolute night and day over what came stock from the factory.

Put a Brimar in V1 and a Sylvania rectifier in my SD18 -- seemed to make a very noticable difference.

Amp sounded less "dark" with more cut and dynamics/harmonics.

FWIW -- completely retubed my Mesa Express with Brimars in the preamp and TAD El84s (not NOS). Again -- seemed to make a positive difference.

Thank you Mike K for the tubage!

I'm running Mullards in all 3 positions. I've even replaced the rectifier tube with a Mullard. Definitely sweeter. To me, it took a bit of the harsh bite out of the Budda SD45 also.
