    Are 12AY7s becoming scarce?

I like to use 12AY7s (preferably NOS) in V1 of my tweed clones. I was looking through several of the usual NOS tube sites and noticed what appeared to be a lack of available tubes and an increase in price of what was available.

Are NOS 12AY7s starting to become like NOS 12AX7s or am I just over reacting?

A sleeve of 5 Westinghouse 12AY7s went on Ebay the other day for $227.50. Way too rich for my blood. The price of them seems to be on their way up.

The only new replacement I know of is from EH and they run almost $20 each.

After seeing the price of NOS, I ordered five of the EH 12AY7s from The Tube Store. $120 w/shipping for the gold pin versions (yeah, I know). I have one in my Trainwreck Express clone (to cut the gain a bit) and like it a lot.

At $20 each for new ones, you can keep them too...

Kinda like anything that hasn't been made for decades for which there is demand.

TAD has a 12AY7 select but I have not tried any. In fact, I do not even know is anyone here in the USA sells them

    TAD 12AY7/6072A

I love their 7025WA selects, hopefully someone will start stocking AY7's soon.
NOS is indeed getting very costly.

I imagine this would open up a market for "specially screened for low microphonics" NOS 12AV7s.

Any idea who the manufacturer is?

The New Sensor website says the EH gold pin 12AY7s will be discontinued after current stock runs out.

Some would say that the time has passed...but yes, if you want them they're not gonna get any more available or cheaper.

They were no where near as common as 12AX7's, 12AU7's or 12AT7's so the supply is low to begin with. All it takes is an audiophile or recording unit to get popular that uses them to drive the price beyond what guitarists can afford. I think there is a famous microphone that uses them.

There are definitely some new micrphones that use them. 12AY7s are still less expensive than comparable 12AX7s so they're not really out of range for guitar players who use NOS 12AX7s.
