This is my uneducated bias, but when I see a flame top les paul or PRS, I have to assume that the owner exclusively plays them in plaid shorts.

I'm not a fan, but people can play what they want.

Not big on plaid shorts, either.

No way - what a horrible, mean stereotype. I’ll have you know I wear tan pants.

I'm not a big fan of them, but I love paisley which I'm sure others hate. Buy what you enjoy.

I'm a plaid shorts plain top guy. Flame, quilt, burl; I love to look at the pics, kinda like pr0n.

    Interesting question.

To me it really depends on the overall look in combination with the guitar's color and the flame pattern.

There are some that definitely come off like they're "trying too hard". Others are simply beautiful. For example, I own a plus top strat in "tobacco sunburst". The rather understated paint colors combine with the flame in a way that's beautiful to my eye yet doesn't just scream "I NEED YOU TO LOOK AT ME!!!". Curiously, I like it most of all because the flame top is a single piece as opposed to being "book matched". I don't know what that changes things for me but it makes it more organic looking to my eye.

I don't own any plaid or khaki shorts but I do like flame tops and figured woods in general. It gets tacky only when it's flamed everything like a flamed maple neck with a flamed maple top.

Every time I pick this one up I've usually got a pretty corny smile goin' on...guess I'm a cheeseball :). No plaid shorts in the closet though, to my knowledge.

I’ve always been into plain tops. Flame seems silly to me...

But then, sometimes it’s just soooooo right. Hard to say.

My personal favourite these days is a neck that is highly flamed so that only I can see it. The secret flame :D
