Asked around for a SS refret, got this quote - does this sound right?

Sent out mail to a bunch of luthiers I could find, as I'm looking to refret an older Fender. I don't really care about it being historically right; I want SS jumbo frets.

    Here's one quote I got

    Re-fret: $450
    SS addition/fee: $200
    New nut: $170
    Setup: $120

    Total: $940

Seems a bit steep? But then again, I haven't had a neck refreted before.

edit: Doing some more research, this indeed turned out to be expensive. Have found two other options in the $400-$500 range, for the exact same procedures.

Should be about 600 after set up and refret with stainless steel frets. Just my two cents.

This was in Norway, mind you. So maybe a bit more expensive than US prices in general. Still haven't heard back from the rest.

Wouldn’t it be cheaper to buy a new neck from warmoth already with SS frets?

I paid just over 4000 NOK at Gulden a few years ago, full refret with SS and PLEK.

Yes, at those prices, it seems I could get two - if not three - necks from Warmoth. But this is a vintage strat which I love (well, everything other than that non-existent original frets)

Thanks - sent a mail to them, too. Looks very promising, a couple of questions:

    How was the work?
Did you give them the whole guitar, or neck only?
Any extra costs for a new nut, or was that included in the price?

The works was exceptionally good! I gave him the whole guitar, I didn't need a new nut, the guitar has a Floyd rose locking nut. :)

I would just buy another guitar or another neck, lol. Not worth it IMO.

$170 for a new nut... what the eff is that?!?! Cray cray.

As for the brutal $200 SS upcharge, I think luthiers do that because they don’t wanna deal with SS frets, the wear on their tools and hassle. Not all, some will just upcharge an appropriate amount.

Anyways, in my personal experience finding a good luthier that isn’t a total dishonest POS of a human being is quite hard. I’ve learned to do most fretwork things on my own, but for the major stuff like replacing frets, I just suck it up and make the two hour travel to the one luthier I’ve found remotely near my area that actually does honest work.

This is the truth. I absolutely price myself out of things I don't like doing.

$200 penalty for SS? ya he really doesn't want to do it

or maybe thinks he will need a new set of filing tools... all the setup guys I've been too have told me theyre not big fans of SS frets

You're putting stainless steel frets on a vintage strat?!?! How vintage???

I think that he doesn't want to get involved. Are you certain you want to do this?

That would have been helpful to include in your initial post, if you wanted useful input.

You can ship to them and they do it for like 350 or something, refrets is all they do and I understand they have a good reputation. I'm toying with the idea of sending them my Jeff Beck Strat neck. Even shipping a whole guitar, getting it regretted, and having it shipped back is cheaper then SF Guitarworks or Brawer which are my local options. I spoke to them via email and I got a good vibe from them.
