Attention pedal companies

Obviously not directed toward every company...

Feel free to chime in, but something that has always seriously bothered me, and seems to be even worse lately, is how far in advance products are being "revealed"

STOP showing us, your customers, products 6 months-year from release. Please for the love of god just stop it, it's terrible poorly thought-out marketing, and it's just cruel to the people who are potential customers. I'm sure social media is partly to blame, just as cable is to blame for a god awful 24 hour news cycle that doesn't need to exist.

We get excited, get our wallets out, then get upset, then forget. Do what Apple does, or as close to it as possible. Announce, promote, and release within a short window. Say what you will about Apple, but they know how to properly market their products and cater to their fans/customers.

Rant over.

Pedals and iPhones are fundamentally different economies. You cant really compare them at all. Apple needs to reveal and deliver within a short window because the reveal identifies the new technology and if its more than a month from delivery another company will jump in and beat them to delivery via software upgrades. Its all about getting somewhere first. They also sell 5 million units in a week or two.

Pedals on the other hand need all the time to build the hype so more and more people know. The fact that you were compelled to post this thread shows that the tactic works.

Why are we still using 1/4" phone jacks from the 1900's? Why? Why? Why?

Guitarists are morons is probably the best answer.

Just think, if we could just let this go, we could have balanced cables, phantom power for on board preamps, lower noise floor, an end to explosive pops, gendered cable runs...

But guitarists are inherently stupidly conservative I guess.

And quit taking peoples money without having the pedals ready to ship. I for one do not ever pre order or get on paid waiting lists but I get tired of reading threads about certain builders not fullfilling orders and promises.......

My understanding is that Apple holds out because if consumers know that apple has a new gadget coming in 2 months consumers will hold off for those 2 months and consequently apple's sales plummet for 2 months. They are secretive enough internally to not worry about their ideas being hijacked. Just what I've heard from the marketing gurus that follow apple. The last time they revealed a new item too early they suffered low sales volumes and wished they hadn't.

Apple doesn't typically thrive on being "first" but being "best"

Of course they have pioneered a lot of tech, but a lot of their "reveals" have been things already released on other devices or seen elsewhere. Hell even most of the stuff they just put on the iphone in the past few months has been on droid for years.

It's about striking while the iron is hot, pedal companies do a good job of building hype and increasing customer desire, but they do not release their products in the appropriate time window most of the time.

If TGP were not so focused on buying pedals, but more on using pedals, then this would not be an issue for anybody.
Almost all the threads on TGP are obsessive/compulsive buying frenzys.
Any pedal maker would see this as an opportunity.

Next time you are posting on TGP, consider actually using the gear to make sounds and music. I believe that posting things like, "want", "GAS", or "drool" is just feeding into the phenomena you are speaking of.
Rant over.

I do agree with you, however the process goes:

BUY -> USE

So naturally buying is always going to be a huge part of it, especially when people are always looking for new/different tones that work for them.
