Austin Speaker Works Recone / Retone ?

Has anyone here sent in speakers to Austin Speakers Works to have this done? If so here a couple questions for you:

1) What speaker(s) did they work on, and how different did they sound when you got them back?
2) In hindsight, would you pay for it again?

Thanks for any input someone can offer, and I hope I'm not posing a question that's already been addressed.

hey,

i just had a celestion black back speaker reconed by austin speaker works and it came back amazing. beautiful clean tones and great distorted sounds. i have it in a 1960 tweed pro. i recently had another black back reconed by another very reputable company and i like the austin recone way better. just for reference, my favorite speaker is the celestion blue and i use mostly vintage amps. hope that helps.

is the black back an older model? I can only think of one of those Mesa 90 watt speakers with a black back. You'll have to excuse my naivety as I'm only familiar with the current celestion catalogue.

*edit* I assume talking about the pre-rola G12H30. Never seen those in person; only photos.

I'm interested in ASW reconing service as well, particularly:

-How different is an ASW recone with using their KTS cone compared to their actual KTS model sonically?

I sent Ron a vintage Celestion G12-65.It was made into a KTS-60 and was far superior to what it was before.
I highly recommend ASW.
I've since got a couple of their KTS-70' and they are the finest (ceramic mag) speakers I've ever played.

I too, wonder if someone who has experience with both could chime in.

Well I am taking the plunge and sending in two vintage 30's to be made over into KTS 60's. I will do my best to answer the question I posed in this thread after they arrive....

So I FINALLY got them back. To give credit where credit is due, ASW gave me a discount on my order because of the time length. Also Ron broke his thumb a while back so that slowed things down.

I've only logged an hour with them so far, but in my opinion they definitely have less "humps" and a smoother response. I wanted to try the retone because I wasn't digging how hard the upper mids/highs and lows were pushed through the vintage 30's. These are definitely warmed up by contrast. I'll report back after I've put them through a lengthier test and a few gigs.

I had them do a greenback. Traded off me Celestion Heritage Greenback after I got it back.
I would do it again. in fact I am having them do a g12h30 as 60hz cone.

Great sounding speakers and they handle 80 watts so you don't need a gang of them for most amps.

Ron seems like a nice guy too.

Recones are great. It may take a bit of time, but they do sound nice.

Ron is indeed a nice guy who cares a great deal about his product, and who took the time to make sure I was getting the right speaker for my individual setup.

Just wanted to report on these one more time. I've played this cab out about 10 times in some small rooms, as well as a small theater several times. My entire rig has more presence; presence in the sense that I'm not playing any louder, but everything has more clarity and just sounds bigger. These are some really musical speakers. I'm so stoked on them I'm dropping in another set to a completely different amp just to see how they'll do.
