Been using the Axe Fx for a while, but couldn't resist the reissue Fish. Point of thread is a lot of guys are saying that they don't like the Axe because it doesn't have knobs like an amp head to tweak while on playing live. So, I'm thinking about seeing how the Fish sounds running it the 4 cable method into the Axe, using the cab sims like a Palmer/Red Box into FRFR. (may even try the Fish with a Palmer into FRFR just to hear that as well)

Anyone doing something like this? Would solve the knob tweaking scenario. I've got a CAE 3+ and SE 3+, but haven't tried this. Has anybody else? Hoping the 6.0 update in the Axe has a assignable noise gate so I could use it on the loop of the Axe with this - I think they maybe the biggest draw back - noise.

Interested to hear what you guys think. :AOK

I do it with amps that I load down and then run into the Axe and into the sims...

    A few different heads...

    And...

THD Flexi 50 loaded down, one line out signal is few in the Axe FX loop, the other to a power amp and miked cab.
    The clips show...
The Flexi panned hard with the Axe's speaker sim, and panned to the other side one of the Axe's amp sims into its speaker sim.

Then the Flexi into the miked V30 (906+57) and the axe.

The Flexi miked panned center, plus the cab sim of the Axe panned hard to one side, and the Axe's modelling panned hard the other way.

Thanks Ed, sweet playing as usual!

Sounds like this is something that might be great for me. Not sure that I'll gig with the Fish unless it just sounds better to me, but a setup with a pre might solve a lot of the complaints about no knob tweaking and still give the best of FRFR convenience.

I am imagining that the Axe cab sims work a little better than say a Palmer, since you can choose from so many different models, plus the mic models.

Plus if I really wanted I could just use the 2nd Fish out to a power amp/cab like some of your clips, though I don't think I would do that anymore.

Now if that Fish would just get here. :dude

The sims are great...especially if you use the Custom IRs from Jay of my Celestion.

I put a Randall RM4 tube preamp (the one with the modules you can swap) in the loop on my Axe FX last night. Was noisier, but the tones sounded wider, if that makes sense. I kept trying to tweak the axe closer, but couldn't quite get it. I've heard people say a sound had a '3d' quality and kinda laughed at it, but I could hear it with this set up.

I'm thinking about getting a line level tube preamp to run the out from the Axe before it hits my QSC to see if that gets it closer to that depth/3d the randall had. It's not that I'm unhappy with the axe, just want to get the most out of it.

Definitely gonna try these! Thanks to You and Jay for these.

I am using a Manley mic pre for exactly what you are describing. Works wonders for me.
