Bass scale question

would a 25.5"-scale bass be playable without stringing it with piano wire? I ask because a guy here is selling a failed Tele>bass experiment and I assume he discovered the geometry was impossible?

define "playable".

with big strings it might make something resembling the right pitch, but it'll be a toy, meaning it won't sound good.

you can't really make up for shorter scales with bigger strings, because those strings are thicker, meaning stiffer, less flexible relative to their total length. that makes them more and more "tubby" or even "sour" sounding, as the upper harmonics start to be out of tune with their own fundamental.

Great answer. No wonder the guy gave up on the project and tossed it into eBay. Thanks, Walter.
