There are many threads about the quality of the Belle Epoch but I wasn't entirely sold until I compared it to my father's EP-3. I made a short video - guess which is which. Pardon the children in the background. https://vimeo.com/126760182

You guys are a lot better at guessing than Gear Talk. Congrats! Either way, the Belle is an amazing little pedal! If I adjust the gain and record level it'll open up the repeats.

The modulation is what gave it away for me.

The Echoplex has the erratic garbly modulation tape sound.
The Belle Epoch has the even calculated 'sway' modulation. I like most of Catalinbreads pedals but that sway is unconvincing.
The cheapo Behringer Echo Machine does a more convincing tape modulation. Garbly....

I don't feel like the Belle is a calculated sway. It feels a bit random, and yeah, if you crank it the digital shines through. Keep it low.

Super close! My findings as well with the Belle Epoch vs my Echoplex units. If the mod was turned down just a tiny bit it would have sounded nearly identical.

The sway is actually relatively random. Have you played this pedal in person?

You can hear the attack of the repeats of the Echoplex. IMO the Belle Epoch is too dark, I hear that in all of the clips I hear. I may get flamed but the closest to sounding and feeling like a real EP3 in a pedal is SS EP3 mode in the DL-4. JMOH

With a little experimentation, between the MIX and the RECORD LEVEL on the Belle, you can have your repeats softer and in the background almost like "ducking" with low RL and a higher Mix or more pronounced and upfront with a lower Mix and higher RL.

Yeah, I have the kids out of the house today, so I may experiment a bit more and see how close I can get it.

I had both for a while (the bass player of one of my former bands had an old Echoplex unit he agreed to lend for a few weeks). You can get pretty similar tones by adjusting the Tone and Mix knobs to get the repeats clearer and more tape-like.

I found that the modulation on the Belle Epoch was convincing up to about 11 o'clock. Above that point, there's just too much sway for a tape echo.

Oh, and powering it on 18V really is important.

Sounds like your dads EP-3 could need a cleaning and demagetizitation, it should be a bit crispier than that actually. At least the two I had were.

I doubt anyone would argue that sonically the Belle Epoch is superior to the EP3. But honestly, they're SO close. For the price and size of a BE, it's an awesome addition to a board.

It could use a cleaning, but why? I like the crinkle and issues. That's what makes it unique.
