Pretty sure you can go to Berkeley and say “manhole” if you want to and not be jailed or escorted to the city limits.

The city itself can’t use “manhole” in any official context. Which it decided, well, for itself.

    Yep

It’s a very hippie dippie kinda town.
    Good outweighs the bad imo.

Great record stores and restaurants still, cool marina area, some great music venues like Freight and Salvage...

Unless you work for the city, right? Then maybe lose your job? No biggie then I guess.

Yep,, Ca. already enjoys some of the highest electricity costs in the country. While natural gas is both efficient and inexpensive, such conspicuous use of (carbon) resources cannot be tolerated.
It's easy to use more electricity when you can just buy from the PNW what you need in peak hours of use, without having to invest in additional infrastructure.
Wait, forget all of the above,, they'll just put-up a few solar panels and everybody will smile and be OK.

It’s probably not that hard for city employees to not say manhole. They probably have some union protections as well, against getting fired for petty rule transgressions. Let us know when you hear about someone getting fired over it.

That’s a quote from Jack Kerouac’s introduction to the seminal 1950s Robert Frank book of photographs The Americans. Since you showed interest I thought I’d pass that along.

Probably made for revenue I mean it is Cali (Heck, you get taxed for driving a pickup truck there). I'm not gonna get too into it since it really isn't worth the firestorm.

I like electricity. It runs all our co gen plants, oil rigs and when we have time, it can even charge a car or two.

You seem interested in defending the government telling people how to talk - so why don’t you let us know how it works out.
I imagine businesses that deal with the city will likewise be required to comply with the speech code.

It keeps the fossil fuel industry healthy, too. Gotta feed those power plants.
