While my BadCat AB 50 has some excellent tone, I've been astounded at how little headroom the clean channel has. I've tried everything from turning the bass, treble, and brilliance all the way down, lowering the guitar volume, but it starts to break up at 7:30-8pm.....I've never had a 6L6 amp before, but for 50 watts of any type tube, this seems extremely low.

The power tubes are probably very old. According to the dealer who I bought it from, the amp hadn't sold for a really long time because noone really knows about this BadCat model due to no advertising, nothing on the website, etc.

I think that my first step here would be to get a new set of tubes, and have them installed and re-biased by a pro.

I'm not trying to be cheap here but I also don't have ridiculous funds.

What are the best 6L6 tubes one can get for under $200 a pair?

Also, should I consider replacing any of the preamp tubes for more headroom?

    Thanks!

You should take it to your amp guy before you waste $200 on tubes.

No amp should break up that quickly. I also think you should take it to a tech first.

Yep, have the amp checked out first. It's possible that your PI tube (the one closest to the power tubes) is dead on one side which would lead to very early breakup. There are also 100 other possibilities.

When/if you're ready for NOS power tubes, the GE's fit the bill.

Mike from KCA knows what he's talking about.
You will have to get whatever tubes you buy biased to the head.
You can also contact Eurotube for tubes & information.

Tall bottle Sylvanias or 7581's would fit the bill. I LOVE the tall bottle Sylvania.I stick them in my HIWATT and they don't even flinch. No red plates. You can really push these.
