Need a set for my Roadster. Any opinions??? I've been a Winged C fan in the past, but just got this amp and not sure what will sound best. Also, I'm told you can put EL34s in it but the consensus is that they are a little bright?

    Anyone mind sharing their preferences/recommendations?

I'm of the opinion that if you don't play very loud output tubes don't contribute a lot to the over all sound.
Buddy of mine put EL35s in his Mark V with little to no change in sound.
His master volumes never been past two though.

Running EL34s in my Mark V definitely changes the sound compared to 6L6s, even at low volumes. That's what I have in there right now, actually.

That's what he says too. I sure can't tell the difference though.

In the new production tube realm, the TAD 6L6WGCs work well.

EL34s will have a bit more midrange and a bit more compressed.

6L6s have more top and bottom and are a bit more dynamic.

Having gone back and forth a number of times I prefer 6L6s, but I encourage others to experiment for themselves.

After doing a bunch of experimenting I've gone back to using stock Mesa tubes myself. Their current 6L6s are Chinese (pretty sure it's the same tube as the TAD 6L6GC) and while their EL34s are EHX.

EDIT: While you're at it, I recommend putting a Tung-Sol 12AX7 in the V1 if you haven't already.

I'm curious to know what the differences are between the 6L6GC and the 6L6WGC?

I would get Mesa 6L6s. The mesa power section is not the kind where hotter tubes sound different... they may just break something.

    Supposedly...
6L6gc= Sylvania/Philips clone, little smoother, warmer.
6l6wgc= GE clone, a little more bite, more forward in presence, bit brighter.
