what are the best compact reverb pedals for achieving ethereal, ambient sounding guitar sounds?

The Dr. Scientist Radical Red Reverberator (which comes in many colors other than red) is great for ambience. It's not exactly compact, but it's not big either. Check out the clips!

ethereal = verbzilla. the octo setting and cave settings... they move you to another world.

LOL!! Yea, if you can get passed the hideous look and the dorky name then you will find a VERY good reverb pedal at a reasonable price.

do any other reverb pedals have settings that can capture the cave or octo settings of the verbzilla?

I don't know about the best...if you want the best you can look in to Lexicon or Eventide but make sure you have enough equity in your home to buy one of those units. :)

Dollar for dollar I think the Verbzilla is pretty damn good.
