I understand they're trying to make a profit, but they're offering $40 for a mint Samsung S3 phone. That is beyond insulting when I can get roughly $100 more on CL.

Maybe they're hoping for people who don't know any better to partake in this program but IMHO, this is blatantly insulting.

I take it you've never tried trading in a used instrument at any music store... especially a big chain store like GC, they take gloves off for the beating you get. Obviously phone stores are a direct cousin...

I'm sure that they buy them from customers and sell them to phone insurance companies like Assurian who gut them and rebuild them to pass along to their clients.

If some is silky enough to give you 140 bucks for a phone three generations old I highly suggest you take it. If there is such a person.

Amazon has a trade-in program, where you receive Amazon Gift Cards. I've found them to be reasonable.

It used to be a lot better but I guess they were losing too much money on it.

Their trade in is more than fair. I traded in my thoroughly used iPhone 5 and got a gift card that I used to buy a new Samsung 46" HDTV for my spare room. That old phone would've just ended up in a junk drawer in my house. It's amazing anyone gets ANYTHING for nasty old germ-covered phones. ;)

This past Christmas we traded in our iphone 5's for $140.00 a piece. Bought both kids Kindle Fires for Christmas. Everything depends on age, condition, desirability etc.,

Beyond insulting? I'm not sure what lies beyond insulting, but that sounds pretty bad. Pistols at dawn may be the only way you can have satisfaction.

If someone offered me $40 for the collection of "antique" (meaning built before 2014) cell phones in my desk drawer, I'd take the money and run.

donate it to one of the programs for abused women and children. $40 isn't enough to buy a nice dinner. do something good with it. it may be old technology but it could make someone elses life better.

Only if you explain why a 3 year old phone isn't worth jack **** and just because some clown is asking $140 for one on CL doesn't mean that it will sell for $140...

Although we are on the same team here, FWIW, eBay's sold prices do seem to confirm the value of the phone.

Now why someone would want an S3 when the S6 is right around the corner and S5s will be flooding the market any day now is another matter...

Yep. Tons are selling anywhere between $100-$150.

2 very good reasons ; they aren't power users and/or they don't have the money to buy the new one.
