No matter what amp, guitar or efx what is the best cab you ever heard? What brand and speakers?
'73 Hiwatt SE4123 w/ original Fanes. Clear, solid and punchy without being harsh.
Up until recently depending on what i needed either an old Marshall 4x12 with greenies or my Bogner 4x12 with 2 greenies and 2 V30s. Hoiwever I was too lazy to schlepp those for quite a while now.
And I've been using mostly a THD 2x12 with h30s or one with Classic 80s.
now that I build myself one of our new 4x12s (2 80s/2 V30s) I'm schlepping 4x12age again.
So i guess the answer is my new THD 4x12.
Heavy, but killer!
Love the new THD 4x12, but I'm not gonna carry a 4x12 around.
So, THD 2x12 w/ THD speakers gets my nod...
I don't really have an extensive resume of 4x12's that I've tried, but my Avatar 4x12 straight with V30's up top and G12H30's on the bottom has beat everything I've put it against recently.
Line 6 4x12 when I owned an HD-147 head
Various Marshalls with either greenies or 75's
Mesa rectifier series cabs, regular and oversized
best cab i've heard was an old Orange 4X12 with original Fanes. i don't know what year it was, but it was old and sounded huge.
Best 4 x 12 was a straight Bogner loaded with 2 alnico Weber Blue Dogs and 2 Silvers. Holy cats, that was a great cab for pin-your-ears-back rock, blues, and believe it or not, jazz (practicing, lotsa luck bringing a 4x12 to any jazz room). Was also GREAT for lower back pain and banged knees, so we parted ways.
Best 2 x 12: oval ported Ken's Cab with 1 Weber Blue Dog and 1 P12NT, 16 ohms, series. 80% of the tone of the 4x12, 25% of the weight and 'turn it down' complaints. Had a Dr.Z, still have a THD (to take to dicey clubs), played a large Bog; my faves are still Ken's.
best that I have are a slant Bogner 4x12 with V30's and a slant VHT 4x12 with P50E's. I give the nod to the Bogner because it sounds pretty good with whatever amp I run with it
My Swanson loaded with alnico Webers (a silver and blue):
Either my Marshall 4x12 with Scumbag's speakers 2 SA12-75 and 2 SA12-55 or my Brown Sound 2x12 with Tone Tubbys. The Scumbags work better for classic rock and Marshalls, the Tone Tubbys for Fusion with Boogies.
My fave 2x12 is my A Brown semi open back with original hemp Tone Tubbies, sounds great everywhere I take it. It used to belong to Mark Karan...
Hopefully my untolexed Antique Pine Bob Burt V Front will be here in the next 10 days, that will be loaded with a Scumback SA12-75 and either a Weber Blue Dog, or another Tone Tubby...can't wait to check that out!
I don't do 4X12s...
I actually just got my hands on a hemp-composite (read: the cabinet is made from hemp ) open back loaded with 2 16ohm hempcone 'tubbies in parallel. I had no idea how cool this thing would sound. With hemp being such a strong fiber the thing just bursts with sound. It's actually the 'brother' to Steve Kimocks.
Germino straight 4x12 w/ 2G12H30s on the bottom, and 2 GBs on top.
For 2x12's, I really like the Germino open back 2x12 with G12H30s with my Konstellation, and my THD loaded with Fane Blue Alnico's paired with either my SLO or Konstellation!
just out of curiosity, who makes the hemp-composite cab?
A-Brown Soun. Same dudes that make the tone tubby. Unfortunatley, from what I understand, there were only a handful made and the supplier has run out of materials. I tried for months to get the last one John had off of him but he wouldn't budge. Luckily, I happen to hook up with someone I knew who had one.
Isn't it always like that with hemp products? As soon as you find out how good it is, you can't get it any more....
I've also gotten the 'Uh, I forgot where I put it, man' line before as well
Best 2X12: Avatar open back with G12H30 & Vintage 30
Best 4X12: Mesa Road King 4X12 (an open back 2X12--Black Shadows--and a closed back 2X12--Vintage 30's--in the same cabinet).
BLB Sound 2x12 loaded with really old EVM-12Ls. Something about the way that thing was built gave the EVs more body and balance. I have no idea where anyone could get one because BLB isn't still in business I think. But that's the best cab I've ever heard.
