I own a lot of nice gear, but I'm looking for a 1x12 combo that I could use for impromptu jams, quick get togethers, rehersals, etc. You know, those times when packing a head & cab just don't make good sense. But since that is all it will be used for, I don't want to spend too much money. :AOK

I will be using my POD XTLive straight into the pre amp section for my tones/sounds which will give me plenty of versatility.

    So here's what my requirements or wants are;

    Good full range sound
Best build quality for the buck
Simple tone stack (B/M/T) or no tone stack at all (slave)
Tube pre & power section (if possible) or hybrid
30-50 tube watt range, higher if solid state
    Nothing fancy
    New if possible

All suggestions readily welcomed. :AOK All I ask is that you speak from experience and not the "my brother's friend's cousin's ex-girl friend's new boy friend's uncle has _________ and I heard it sounds great" recommendation. :nono

In case you are wondering about why I'm not using the original Fender Tweed Deluxe in my sig for this, well it has too much centimental value to risk taking it somewhere and having something happen to it.

If you have something you are selling that fits the bill let me know.

    Thanks,
    Mike

Classic 30 is the first amp that comes to mind.

I use a Valve Junior with a GNX4. $100 new, although I don't know whether the combo may have been phased out for the head. It has pre and power amp tubes (EL84) and works pretty well with the effects and amp simulations. Mine has an 8 inch speaker, but it also has extension jacks for 4, 8 and 16 ohm speakers. The only draw back is at 5 watts it may not meet your volume requirements. You can get a decent amount of volume, but if you turn it up to much you will distort, although it is a good power tube distortion. Depending how loud you rehearse it may work.

Reverend Hellhound 1x12 combo. Great grab-and-go amp for jams and gigs in small venues. They are light, you can get a variety of sounds from clean Fender to Marshall crunch, they have a switchable power supply(40/60 watts), good reverb, 6L6 power tubes & 12AX7 preamp tubes, simple controls and they're in your price range. They aren't made any longer, but I've seen them for sale on both eBay and in the Emporium. I had one a few years ago and I wish I hadn't sold it.

For me its my US made Palomino V32 hands down-especially since I dont use pedals for dirt. Its got the best OD of the most commonly suggested amps in this range( HRD,C30 and V32) and great cleans too. I owned all three and for me the V32 was the "keeper". The C30 was a close second. The HRD would be too if I used pedals for dirt-its dirty channel stinks .Bob

Thanks for the replies so far. I have been looking at the Peavey Classic 30 and Hot Rod Deluxe amp as an option. But I have also been looking at the Peavey Windsor 20 watt 1x12 combo too.

Also keep in mind that I am open to suggestions on solid state amps, although tube driven is my prefference.

The Windsor might not have enough headroom for your purposes. Its 20 watts with a KT88. But it ships with an el34.

Reverend Hellhound is a good choice. Pignose G60VR is nearly identical, especially from the FX in through the output, and cheaper. Get a better speaker like a Weber Sig12B or Private Jack and you're in business.

Went into a local mom and pop music store. Amongst the various amps, there was a used Fender HR Deluxe set up, and an empty spot next to it.

When I asked if I could try the HRD, the salesperson told me that they also carry the Crate V tube amps. They were out of stock at that time (this is the empty spot next to the Fender). Seems customers would play the HRD, then play the Crate V, and buy the Crate!

The salesperson said "That Fender really sells those Crates for us!" :)

    Had to share that ...

Have you considered the 18 or 50 watt Atomic Reactor that's designed for just this purpose?

What's the difference between the Palemino and V-series amps?
