Best combo amp under $800 used for a single P-90?

I have just picked up a VERY special guitar I don't think I'll be trying to part ways with for awhile (although we all know how that story ends...lol). Trouble is, I have never had a guitar for a long period which had a single P90 and that's it. I can only use a 112 or 212 combo (212 if not too heavy) in my current situation.

If it matters, I run a standard pedal board with an overdrive or two, usually a high gain distortion, wah, tuner, chorus, flanger, tremolo, delay, and reverb.

Most of my music is clean or very slightly overdriven. However the songs I do play distorted need a bassy ker chunka chunk type distortion, not trebly and nasaly.

Looking to spend no more than $500 ideally, but can possibly go up to $800.

Ideas? Thanks all!

How about a Mesa rectoverb. Probably closer to the $800 mark, but it gets pretty chunky.

I don't know exactly what you're aiming for, but the first time i played a LP Jr thru a Dr Z Carmen Ghia, my ears perked up. Totally one of those "oooh...we've got somethin' here!!" moments. Just bought my first single p'up LP Jr. Surely will be tempted to go for the Ghia (again!) at some point.

cheers, g'luck

A Reason Bambino + P90's is a great combo!
i prefer a g12-65 type speaker in the combo but the stock private jack sounds great also.

Wow... 2 votes for the Peavey Classics, eh? NEVER woulda guessed that would happen on a boo-tique driven community like TGP... Or is it just the price restriction I put on it thats bringin' in the Peavey vote?

Depends on your volume needs. If you dont need loud, go for a used boutique 5e3. The transition from cleans to dirty is something to hear.

It will make your pedals obsolete.

I need apartment level volume 50% of the time... however at times I will need to crank it a bit, so nothing less than 18 or 20 watts.

I was going to suggest a Reeves Custom 12, which should sound spectacular with
a P-90 and be both portable and affordable as well as apartment friendly.

Budda SD-18 (1x12 combo) is the answer. It sounds fantastic with P-90s. You can find these used for $800 or slightly less. It's the most tone-per-dollar that you will ever get in a giggable rock amp. The 1x12 combo is very light for an all tube amp, and the Phat 12 speaker will give you the thick low-end that you're looking for. I play my LP Special through my Budda, and it's a killer setup.

I don't think so.

I don't own one, nor ever have I, but the Peavey Classic 30 is a sweet little Grab `n Go amp. I do, on the other hand, own an Egnater Rebel 30, and cannot say enough good things about it. Based on a recent experience, I also like the way a Fender Blues Jr sounds and would think any one of those three a good choice.

If you could find a Princeton Reverb (SF with cosmetic issues) under your price point, it's a killer sounding amp! Throw in a few pedals for your distortion and you're golden. At the Arlington show, where I was demoing a 54 LP I'm kinda looking to sell, I had 4 people offer to buy the Princeton Reverb! They sound that good.

I agree whole heartedly with the Budda 18. It was my favorite amp and I am so sad I got rid of it. I'd buy one for $650-$700 if I could find one, but the guy on here selling his has not responded to any of my PM's over the past month. :(

As far as the Priceton, I've never tried a Silverface, but the RI's did not impress me that much and were not loud enough to keep up with the guys I play with. I will keep an eye out for a SF though.

Reeves is awesome... another one I'm about to look into if I can find one used that someone can ship me.

Thanks all. Keep those suggestions coming!

Reeves does ship all over the world on a regular basis.

Talk to Bill directly.

Vox AC15 C1 or whatever they call it now. Voxes sound great with P90s and the amp can get pretty crunchy on its own -- but with a pedal you can do whatever you need since it has a Celestion Greenback 12" and a mostly closed back cabinet.
