I had been using a KLON since 2005, but sold it shortly after getting a Wessex. I'm looking for a good stand-alone distortion pedal to use with my AC30 amplifier. My TS9 sounds great with the Wessex, but would still like to get a dedicated distortion. Burnley maybe?

Rat, Crowther Hotcake, King of Tone, your favorite flavor of fuzz, all these can work well depending on what you want. Personally I usually like the cranked amp tone with volume reduced by a master volume or an attenuator as well or better, though.

You might get a better response by posting this in the effects forum.

I've never had an AC30, but I recently played a Strat through a Fulltone 70 into an AC30. It sounded phenomenal. Made me want an AC30.

Interesting... Is the 70's pedal a germanium based circuit?

My amp is actually a Bogner Metropolis 30 watt, which is basically a muscled-up AC30.

Hmm, for OD I like a good germanium treble booster. Several decent candidates to choose from. For distortion, a Crowther Hotcake is MADE for the AC30. And for fuzz, a decent germanium fuzz is the ticket (I like the low output white dot Analogman surface for this).

    I love me an early 60s AC30.

Since it's a pedal + amp query, I figured the SHL would result in a wider response.

I tried a Diaz Texas Ranger last week. Sounded stunning through my Guytron GT20! I would have kept it, but it was an old one with no 9VDC input.

I think I may have made a mistake by sending it back?

    Yeah, treble booster ideal, solid.
Rory Gallagher oft used an AC30 w/ similar.
Brian May? AC30 w/ custom Rangemaster clone.

While the Metropolis was a fine amp, it's fairly dissimilar from an AC30. I thought it sounded a lot like an 18 watt Marshall souped up to its 36 watt version.
You might try a Timmy or even an AC foundation pedal like the Ace 30 or CB30.

Rat is what you get after everything else doesn't cut it, because it just works. Might not be the best sounding in isolation, but live it just works.

Turbo Rats works slightly better for Humbuckers, but regular Rats work well with Strats.

Long time AC15 and AC30 user, and in my opinion the Bearfoot EGDM and Skreddy Hybrid Fuzz Driver are by far the best. I was a rat user for years and can appreciate it for what it is, but it just doesn't compare to these two.

if your amp is already breaking up the Hotcake is king. if you're running it clean and want added distortion, the RAT does this the best.

Hotcake, Timmy, Rat, and Fulltone 70 all worked great with my AC30 and single coil guitars when I had it!
