for kids say, 8-13 years of age...

    squier?

some of my students are using really cheap guitars (think no name stuff)
but the parents are willing to upgrade.

so...keep the suggestions reasonably cheap please

I am thinking squier, but yeah...not sure.

The Squier Tele is not bad...my boy has one. A step up...about $150.00 and you're into Gibson Melody Maker territory....and it's a great guitar.

+1 for Melody Maker. My 9 year old daughter has one. (Yes, I play it.)

    or an epi.
but yes, if you want to spring a bit extra and get into any of the Gibson faded series you will get your money's worth in extra instrument
    and then some

I bought a used Ibanez sg look alike for my nephew. $84.50. New strings, a bit of adjusting to the action and an input jack fix made it into a pretty good player.

I would go with a Squire Strat. Prowl the Bay for a deal. I am a Tele guy, but they are not newbie friendly.

Squier's are fine, but, personally I suggest it be equipped with HB pups. I think they are easier for most beginners to make sound decent into most amps plus the ubiquitous OD pedal.

The new Squier Bullets are better guitars than their price, or country of origin would indicate. Slap a single coil sized HB in the bridge, and you have a rocker. The stock ceramic pickups are actually not too shabby for cheapies.

Right. Some of the Squiers are great. I love the way that vintage modified tele plays.

Rondomusic (www.rondomusic.com) has some great cheap guitars/basses, if you want to buy new.

If you're OK with used stuff, check out new(ish) stuff from Samick or Cort on ebay etc. Those guys ghost build for Fender, Epiphone, Ibanez, Schecter, and some others...so you can get really nice stuff for way cheap.
