What's the best NOS preamp tube for a Goodsell? Should V1 and V2 be replaced or just V1?

V1 is the one to change for the most improvement...V2 is the phase inverter.

Just about any NOS 12AX7 will be an improvement.

Some good NOS EL84's will help too, and a good NOS rectifier should last forever in that amp.

buy a few and do some taste tests. "best" is *very* subjective.

I can always buy tons of tubes and experiment but I figured I might learn from others who have toyed with this particular amp. NOS tubes can be quite pricey!

I have RCA 7189s, Amperex Bugle Boys, every imaginable exotic tube -
I run matched EHs in my personal stuff in the power section, which was how the amp was designed. In my semi-qualified opinion, there's no measurable improvement with NOS. I categorically stay away from JJs in this application. The only place any difference can be appreciated will be in V1, but there is no "best"... who makes the best cheeseburger?

Yeah I guess best isn't the right word. Any NOS you particularly like for V1? :)

I do love cheese burgers, and I do love the way the Goodsell sounds w/ the stock tubes. perhaps a little booster-overdrive/hot sauce for extra flavor?! :stir

I just re-tubed my S17 MkII non-reverb, and this cheeseburger tastes awesome!

    The special sauce is:

V1 - Amperex ECC83 (used tests great, pulled from a Hammond organ)
    V2 - PentaLabs 12AX7
Power Tubes - EH EL84s (matched, direct from Richard)
Rectifier - NOS JAN Philips 5Y3GT (inexpensive NOS)

My recipe was created after a discussion with Richard.

    Bon appetit!

Here's my current (pun intended) special sauce for my Mk2:

    V1 - GE 12AX7
    V2 - GE 12AX7
    Power tubes - RCA 7189
    Rectifier - RCA 5Y3GT

Having messed around with various other combinations I feel it's safe to say that one can get slightly different voicings via tube rolling with this amp, but one won't necessarily be better than another, just different.
I can tell a little difference at home, but not really much at all when gigging.
This amp pretty much sounds just as good with its stock tube complement.
I agree that changing V1 has the most noticeable effect.
