Who is your favorite guitarist to see and hear live and why?
Redd Volkaert and my favorite player, who I try to mention in every post , Bugs Henderson.
Pete Townshend because of his unbridled energy, even in his 60's.
Edward Van Halen. He's my biggest influence.
I havn't seen anyone regularly in a long time.
I'll vote for Jerry Garcia, I saw him plenty of times. He gigged more than most any rock star in his league. He was all about live playing. Also the whole thing with the dancing crowd, made the show exciting even when he was sloppy.
Another cat I go see when I can is Keith Wiatt. He is the lead player in The Blasters nowadays. I like him cause he sounds like me but better. Just does those normal ol' rock n roll licks all night and does em right.
I am not a fan of this guys music, but watching Phil Keaggy play is an experience. I have seen him a couple of times do a solo act and was entertained for the entire sets both times.
Richard Thompson & Allan Holdsworth
EJ from 1986 to 1993. Total command, completely willing to challenge himself, always taking songs to new and uncharted places. Absolutely thrilling. AND some very funny stage patter.
Oh! And if you catch Buckethead on a good night, as I have several times, you'll leave with a sense of fulfillment that is hard to put into words. You'll turn to total strangers and ask them, "Is it just me, or was that the greatest thing you've ever witnessed?"
Right now its Dweezil Zappa. Not only does he do a great job playing his dads music, but he obviously has the chops and his consistency is just mind blowing. Every time I see him he plays incredibly well. The work is putting out right now is just incredible.
I'll say Brian Setzer. The times I've seen him with the Orchestra and in smaller lineups he has always delivered, big time! Ronnie Earl, Duke, Watson, Funderburgh, Ramos, all the usual guys, live is where they come alive, good as the records may be. Back in the day, Johnny Winter could and would bring it like no one else. EC, live is where he needs to be heard. There are others.
Without a doubt it's Mike Scheidt of YOB. First off he looks like a cross between Gandalf and Dumbledore, except with full sleeves. He's easily one of the most physical guitarists I've ever seen in terms of just how into playing he gets. You can tell it's a profoundly cathartic experience for him. Plus the guy's just a monster guitar player, nobody writes heavier riffs than he does.
I've seen a lot of great players live but one totally unexpected guy was Nuno from Extreme. I'm not a huge fan and I knew he was a great player but seeing them on tour with Ratt a few years ago I was blown away by his playing. I couldn't believe he could move around the stage so much and play all his parts note perfect with his guitar slung so low.
Dick Dale & Dean DeLeo!
eric johnson. his recorded tones don't compare to hearing them in person. i always enjoy seeing/hearing his clean chord work on the cliffs intro. he always plays an unrecorded song or two as well as a few good covers.
if he was still performing, i'd have to mention vito bratta. he made everything he played look effortless. his playing was exciting. he'd throw in all kinds of fills & tricks that left you shaking your head.
And dont forget sing too.
Trower....monstrous tone live
Yngwie ... was jaw-dropping live. I could not believe he pulled that stuff.
I have to agree. I'm not a huge fan but i saw him in The Netherlands in Maastricht around 90-91 time frame and was completely blown away. I never saw anyone play like that live.
Russ parish (satchel) steel panther. Can do it all live.
+1 for yngwie.
he played great everytime i saw him.
