    Head preferred.

I had a JVM410 with dual masters, and that amp sounded great at lower volumes. Actually debating picking up another.

What else fits, say $2500 and under, prefer head not combo. Lower wattage than 50/100 can certainly be put under consideration.

Not necessarily metal, per se, though some of my tones fit there. But very hard rock and on up.

Best I've used so far is on a friedman. Sounded great on .5 up to 10. I've got a carol ann on the way which also gets rave reviews on the masters.

    Boogie Mark V!

I use it often very late at night while sharing a wall with other people and it still sounds great (and doesn't disturb others)!

Best I've heard is a Rivera. Put the boost on and volume low and it actually sounds like it is being driven hard.

Mark V is the best sounding "bedroom amp" I've played.

If I could I would try Friedman, Landry, PWE, and Carol Ann for the Master. Otherwise the Tone King Royalist w/ the built in Iron Man Attenuator looks pretty fantastic. My Reinhardt with power scaling is pretty awesome down to about 40%. I use it in combination with a Rivera RockCrusher and have amazing tone at any volume.

Of all the amps I've owned, I liked the masters on bogners. Very usable at any volume, especially Uberschall revision 2, Ecstasy 100b and 101b. Didn't care too much for the master on the shiva though. On amps that I've played but not owned, I liked the master volume on the Diezel Einstein and the JVM.

I've played a fair number (Mesa Marks, Rectos, Electra Dynes, etc; Diezels, VHT/Fryette; Engls; Marshalls; Friedmans; Soldanos, 3rd Power, 5150s; etc. etc.). The only ones that I had trouble with were 1x12 combos. Plug any of them into a 4x12 and even at TV volumes, they sounded fine. Obviously I preferred the voice of some versus others, but I've not run into a "modern" master volume amp that doesn't have a usable master volume. I even think a JCM 800 sounds fine at low volumes if it's feeding a 4x12 of G12-65 speakers.

Fwiw, I only use a 1x12 cab at home and I think it sounds great. I've got no experience with the combo format though

Hard to beat the Jose master. Many builders use them.
